Jill Duggar Dillard and Derick Dillard have finally shared their first mission trip update of 2016, and it might raise more questions than it answers. The update hints that Jill and Derick recently experienced something stressful that made them question their decision to move to an undisclosed location in Central America, and Derick let fans know that he and Jill Duggar are well aware of the accusations that they are neglecting their baby son. His blog post also includes a terrifying tale about a tarantula and Jill’s toothbrush.
As the Inquisitr previously reported, Jill promised fans a mission trip update in a February 1 Instagram post. However, Jill Duggar’s next social media message wasn’t much of an update — she shared a photo of Derick painting her toenails. This picture sparked rumors that Jill might be pregnant with her second child, but Derick’s February 11 post on the Dillard Family Blog doesn’t say anything about pregnancy.
The lack of an update on the status of Jill Duggar’s womb might surprise fans and critics of the Duggar family, who have voiced their concerns about Jill getting pregnant in Central America. The mosquito-borne Zika virus is becoming a serious problem in Latin American countries, and it can cause devastating birth defects. As the Guardian reports, there have been calls for these countries to lessen restrictions on abortion and increase access to contraceptives, both of which the Duggars are against.
Perhaps the Zika virus is what Derick Dillard is alluding to in the cryptic opening paragraph of his mission update, which is titled “Engaging the Battle.”
“It is my pleasure to write concerning the work that the Lord is doing in the Latin American world at this present time, including the sanctifying work that He is doing within me personally as well as my family,” Derick writes.
“We have been stretched in ways that we could not have imagined in recent days, of which I will not go into the details on at this time, but we have confidence and trust in the Lord’s faithfulness in that which He has called us.”
Perhaps it wasn’t the best idea to open his blog in this manner — Derick just opened himself and Jill Duggar up to a lot of speculation about what has tested the couple. It sounds like whatever it was made Jill and Derick question their “calling” to become missionaries.
Derick goes on to confirm that he and Jill Duggar are now working with S.O.S. (Seekers of Souls) Ministries, and they are currently living in one of the organization’s “Hospitality Houses.” The house is near S.O.S. Ministries’ new sports complex, so Jill and Derick host weekly soccer games for local kids.
Derick defends the “work” that he and Jill are doing, which has been criticized for being heavy on the preaching/converting and light on the good works like feeding the hungry, building houses, etc. According to Derick, the gospel is “life-saving knowledge” that’s just as important as having food to eat and a roof over one’s head.
“It is our aim not to separate the very apparent physical need of humanitarian aid from the spiritual need of the Gospel of Jesus Christ for eternal salvation. These two needs are neither mutually exclusive nor conditional. And, I would submit that one is not providing the fullest scope of humanitarian aid if they neglect to share that which will give people life beyond this present world.”
Later on in his post, Derick shares an anecdote about how he and Jill Duggar lured a teenage boy with a bedridden mother to the church by promising him a few supplies in exchange for his presence there.
“At another home we visited, 15-year-old Jason came to the door where we talked for a while, then invited him to come to the church where we could give him some items he needed.”
Derick reports that he and Jill Duggar have been making many home visits to speak with people “who may or may not be Christians.” For listening to Jill and Derick share the gospel, these people are sometimes rewarded with “food and personal hygiene items.”
According to the blog post, Jill Duggar’s parents, Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar, recently surprised their daughter with an “impromptu visit for a few days.” There’s no word on whether TLC cameras accompanied the couple to document the surprise. As the Inquisitr previously reported, various members of the Duggar family have been spotted being tailed by TLC camera crews recently. Derick doesn’t mention the possibility that he and Jill might return to TV in his blog post.
Derick’s update includes a quick response to the allegations that he and Jill Duggar are neglecting their son. According to the Hollywood Gossip, the parents have come under fire for sharing multiple photos of baby Israel with bruises on his face, and they were also criticized for letting their son play beside an uncovered electrical outlet. Derick didn’t reveal where those mysterious bruises came from, but he reassured fans and critics that he and Jill have been doing a lot of baby-proofing now that Israel is more mobile.
“We’ve had to baby proof our house, adding cabinet locks and outlet covers that ‘Grandma C’ (my mom) sent down,” Derick wrote.
It sounds like uncovered electrical outlets might be the least of Israel’s worries. According to Derick, he and Jill have encountered quite a few tarantulas and scorpions in Central America, and the creepy crawlies can turn up in the worst possible places.
“We weren’t used to seeing scorpions, tarantulas and cougars back home but we’ve seen them all and the first two multiple times! Jill opened her makeup bag to find a tarantula on top of her toothbrush.”
