Idris Elba Splits With Girlfriend After Being Spotted With Naomi Campbell

Idris Elba has had an undeniably successful career as an actor and is currently experiencing a high point in that regard. He has both been nominated for and won many awards. Among 43-year-old Elba’s recent awards are two Screen Actors Guild Awards – one for his role as Commandant in Beasts of No Nation and one for his role as DCI John Luther in Luther. Today, Idris finds his name in the headlines, however, for his split from his girlfriend of two-and-a-half years and the mother of his 22-month-old son, Naiyana Garth.

As Yahoo! reports, it’s a break that doesn’t come as a complete surprise as Elba was spotted leaving the 1 Oak nightclub with Naomi Campbell last week. Elba and Naomi reportedly became friends following a charity event for Fashion For Relief in 2014. The absence of Garth at the SAG Awards was also noted and raised questions regarding the status of their relationship. Idris took his 13-year-old daughter Isan to that ceremony. Viewers and fans also noticed that Elba did not mention Garth in his SAG Awards acceptance speech. Naiyana was also absent from the ceremony for the British Film Awards Sunday.

Idris received a Best Actor award for his Beast of No Nation performance at that ceremony.

Elba moved out of the apartment he shared with Naiyana and their son Winston this past weekend, according to a report from Daily Mail. He didn’t move far though and is now living in an apartment that is near Winston and and Naiyana so he can stay involved in his child’s life.

Idris was rumored last year as being on the list of actors being considered to play the coveted role of James Bond when Daniel Craig expressed a desire to move on from the role and do other work. Controversy arose around this possibility as, if it happened, it would make Idris Elba the first black man to portray Bond. Many supported the idea, however, believing that with Idris’s suave demeanor and elegant good looks, he would be a good choice for the role. Supporters of Elba as Bond were incensed when Daily Mail reported that Anthony Horowitz, who the family of Ian Fleming has chosen to write a James Bond novel, referred to Idris as “too street” for the role. Horowitz later apologized on Twitter for his comment, saying,

“I’m really sorry my comments about Idris Elba have caused offense. That wasn’t my intention. I was asked in my interview if Idris Elba would make a good James Bond. In the article I expressed the opinion that to my mind Adrian Lester would be a better choice but I’m a writer not a casting director so what do I know?… Clumsily, I chose the word ‘street’ as Elba’s gritty portrayal of DCI John Luther was in my mind but I admit it was a poor choice of word. I am mortified to have caused offense.”

Elba confirmed to TMZ in November that he will not be playing the role of James Bond.

In total, Idris Elba has received 56 nominations and 17 awards for his acting. In addition to the ones mentioned earlier in this article, some of his other awards include a 2012 Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Miniseries or Motion Picture Made for Television for his role in Luther.
