‘The Purge 3: Election Year’ Releases Horrifying Political Trailer [Watch]

The Purge: Election Year has officially dropped its trailer for the third installment in the wildly successful and hugely popular Purge franchise. Even though this franchise has always been considered horror films, they have always had a political component present to them that mirror what life is really like and twists it into what it could potentially be like in the near future.

In the beginning, The Purge focused on a successful family in California who lived in the near future and had a happy life in an upper-class suburb. The basis for the film is that the crime rate had dropped below 1 percent since the New Founding Fathers had taken over and implemented their style of government in American society.

Suffice it to say, the new style meant that once a year for 12 hours, society at large had the right to “purge” themselves of their frustration and anger that would normally cause them to commit violent crimes. So this one night a year, all crime was legal, including murder. The only exception to the rule was that the New Founding Fathers could not be harmed during the annual event.

Now that The Purge: Election Year trailer has been released, the political component has been brought back into the forefront of the movie’s plot, and there is a larger theme with much more at stake than just a family. This time, the Purge is in danger of losing its entire foundation over the future society with a new leader looking to take over as the president and rid society of the awful holiday that had plagued them for so long, according to Collider.

The new candidate for political office is a woman (Elizabeth Mitchell) who is running for president, and she is running on a platform to end the annual Purge. But Election Day cannot come soon enough, and when the clock strikes the final hour, she is forced to lock down in a bunker with none other than Sergeant (Frank Grillo), from The Purge: Anarchy, to protect her.

The events of The Purge: Election Year take place 15 years later and feature the star of the last film alongside the presidential candidate as they navigate the tricky night of the Purge. Although they had been locked down for the event, it is soon revealed that there was a traitor in their camp, and they have been exposed to the murderous people of the night.

In the trailer for The Purge: Election Year, there is one revealing moment when a “New Founding Father” is seen remarking about the lady running for office after seeing the media appearance where she pledged to end the Purge. The man simply said that she had to go, which leads viewers to believe that the traitor within her camp has set her up to be murdered before she can ever get to election day.

The events of the film play out in classically dramatic fashion, with all of the horrors that the Purge franchise is inherent to show. That includes murderous people, mostly affluent, roaming the streets in masks and terrorizing those who did not have the money to lock down for the night.

It mirrors the events of The Purge: Anarchy with its stylistic horror and the way the rich victimize the poor, which is a theme that has been inherent to all of The Purge franchise films.

Suffice it to say, fans of the franchise are really going to love The Purge: Election Year. For those who have been keeping up with the movies, there are many themes in them that mirror real life events. With this third film being titled The Purge: Election Year, it plays right into the current election season that is playing out in all mainstream news outlets and social media.
