Considering the 5-year gap between Battlefield 2 and Battlefield 3, one might have expected that DICE would take a break before moving on to the 4th entry in the franchise. Either that, or revisit the Bad Company franchise.

Surprisingly, that’s not the case.

Early this morning, EA released a multiplayer-focused developer diary for Medal of Honor: Warfighter, developer Danger Close’s follow-up to their 2010 reboot of the FPS franchise. In the video, which you can find at the bottom of this post, EA casually confirms that Battlefield 4 is happening, and that everyone who pre-orders Warfighter will get access to the game’s beta, which will take place fall 2013.

“Though Battlefield and Medal of Honor Warfighter each offer players a completely unique experience, they are united by their underlying technology base – Frostbite. These are two of the hottest shooters, coming together to deliver a one-two punch of action, intensity and shooter entertainment,” Frank Gibeau, President of EA Labels, said in a press release released shortly after.

Sadly, all we know about Battlefield 4 at this point is that it’s happening, and the beta will be out sometime around the latter half of next year. EA isn’t saying a word about platforms, a release date, or anything else for that matter.

Considering that EA still has Battlefield 3 content coming out throughout the remainder of the year (and well into the next), I find this quite a bit surprising. Sure, it’s not surprising that something Battlefield-related is in the works, but it is surprising that it’s Battlefield 4.
