Ryan Reynolds Is A Hands-On Dad, Says He Can Do The ‘Dirty Work’

Ryan Reynolds’ career is on a hot streak right now, since the reviews are overwhelmingly positive for his new film, Deadpool. It sounds like that’s not the only positive thing happening in Reynolds’ life, as his personal life seems to be on the up and up.

A year and some change ago, he and wife Blake Lively welcomed their daughter, James, and since then, Ryan has slowly opened up about what life is like as a new dad.

From all the interviews he’s given, it seems like Ryan Reynolds is a hands-on dad in the best of ways, and really steps up to the plate when it comes to his family. In an interview with NBC’s Today, Reynolds opened up about how he and wife Blake balance their family life together.

“I always do the dirty work. I’m happy to do the dirty work. So does she, but I’m always, I love getting up in the middle of the night, I’m fine with that, you know, all that stuff.”

As far as what he thinks about fatherhood, Reynolds calls it “amazing.”

That said, balancing life and career isn’t always easy for Reynolds. He explained his first pang of sadness in leaving his daughter, James, to promote his superhero film, Deadpool.

“I had one of those mornings, rare mornings, where my daughter just didn’t want me to leave—and it was only because my wife was asleep, but it was like, you didn’t want to go. You just like, it kills you.”

Since he’s become a father, Reynolds has brought his own special brand of humor in talking about the many firsts that come with being a first time father.

Prior to promoting Deadpool on the Today Show, Reynolds spoke to Men’s Health about “hallucinating” due to lack of sleep in the first six months of his daughter’s life.

“During those first six months, it’s amazing that you find a way to keep going. Just the lack of sleep, and the hallucinations. F**k peyote. You want to trip balls? Have a kid and see what it’s like to be awake for a month straight.”

He continued, “You’ll have moments where you’re like, ‘Did I really ride a unicorn to work?’ I’m pretty sure I didn’t, but I don’t know.”

As the Inquisitr reported, Reynolds also opened up about his passing of his father, James Reynolds, who he named his daughter after. His father had a long battle with Parkinson’s disease, and although it brought them closer together, the actor admitted that he had a “deeply complicated relationship.” Following his passing, Ryan said that the nature of their relationship, left behind some questions that will never be answered.

By playing Deadpool, a role which he said he had wanted to play for 10 years, he said that he learned how to deal with his pain through comedy.

“I understand the idea of filtering pain through a prism of comedy. I think this character does that quite well. He obviously takes it too far. He wakes up in the morning exclusively to annoy everyone around him. But for your average civilian like me, I think there’s something really relatable about that idea.”
