Cindy Crawford Says Ex-Husband Richard Gere Is ‘Like A Stranger’ To Her And They Were Never Friends

Cindy Crawford says she hardly ever sees ex-husband Richard Gere any more, and when she does cross paths with him, he’s like a stranger to her. The 49-year-old retired supermodel made her comments about her movie star ex on Marc Maron’s WTH Podcast. Crawford said that she was too young for Gere during their six-year relationship, and she added that she’s not sure they were ever even friends.

“I think part of the problem in our relationship was that we were a lot of other things, but I don’t know if we were ever friends – like peers, because I was young, and he was Richard Gere.”

Cindy Crawford was married to Richard Gere from 1991 to 1995. Now, 20 years after their split, the brunette beauty says that, when she runs into the actor, they are cordial, but definitely not close.

“We’re friendly, but I think it’s almost like he’s gone back to being, like, ‘Richard Gere’ again, like a stranger, because we don’t really see each other that much.”

In an interview on Oprah’s Master Class, Cindy Crawford explained that, when she first met the Pretty Women star, she was in her early 20s and still growing up, so there was always a bit of a disconnect.

“At 22, as a young woman, I was kind of still figuring out who I was and what I wanted to be, and he was already 37, so in some ways he knew that I was growing and changing. But I didn’t want to hear it from him.”

Cindy Crawford was only 22 years old when she met her movie star future husband at a BBQ hosted by famed photographer Herb Ritts, and just 26 years old when she married Gere, who was 16 years her senior. The wealthy power couple famously exchanged foil wedding rings in a quickie ceremony at a Las Vegas chapel, but Cindy later described the whole thing as surreal and said she never really felt married to Richard.

Of course, this isn’t the first time Cindy Crawford has talked about the demise of her marriage to the Hollywood hunk. Shortly after their split in 1995, Crawford told People that, when she was with Gere, they were both at the height of their careers, and it was like they had two separate lives.

“We didn’t spend enough time together. And we’re equally responsible for that. We thought it would be okay if we just flew in from Paris to L.A. to get together for a night to see each other. It wasn’t.”

While her relationship with Richard clearly didn’t last, Cindy says her marriage to her second husband, Rande Gerber, has worked out because she was “ready” for the relationship. On Maron’s podcast, Crawford revealed that she and her second husband started things out the right way with a good friendship.

“I think why Rande and I really work is that we were friends first. I never pretended to like baseball or meditation or whatever the version is.”

Cindy and Rande Gerber have been married for nearly 18 years. They exchanged vows on Paradise Island in the Bahamas in 1998, and today they have two children together, Presley, 16, and Kaia, 14.

While Richard Gere has been mostly mum about his relationship and marriage to Cindy Crawford, in the past the model has described her time with the Officer and a Gentleman star as a “great chapter in my life.” Considering they’re now strangers, it sounds like that chapter is definitely closed for good.
