‘Captain America’ Recruits Anthony Mackie As Falcon

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is being cast, and it seems that Anthony Mackie will be joining the production as Falcon.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel isn’t taking any breaks after having a huge part in Comic-Con over the weekend. Instead, they are spending time negotiating with Mackie, who star alongside Chris Evans in the Captain America: The First Avenger sequel.

The film is set to be released on April 4, 2014, and while plot details have been kept very secret, the subtitle suggests, according to The Hollywood Reporter, that the storyline will be based on “a respected comic book storyline from the 2000s that resurrected Captain America’s sidekick Bucky as a brainwashed super-assassin known as the Winter Solider.”

According to MTV, Falcon, in the comics, is a longtime friend, and also a partner to Captain America/Steve Nash. He is able to communicate with birds telepathically and wears a suit that allows him to fly. Anthony Mackie’s casting as Falcon in Captain America comes weeks after the actor expressed his desire to play Black Panther in a Marvel movie. He stated in an interview that:

“I love Black Panther and I love the story behind it. It would be cool to be a part of it…If Black Panther is made into a movie, I would love for it to be along the lines of Batman.”

The Huffington Post notes that Kevin Ferge, the president of Marvel Studios spoke with them about the possibility of Falcon’s appearance in the Captain America sequel. when asked about the prospect, Ferge stated:

“That was a fun era. It is interesting that you ask that question. And I’m not going to give you an answer. But I will give you kudos for pointing that out and recognizing that [Captain America had a sidekick].”
