FitBit Pregnancy: Husband Learns Wife Is 4 Weeks Pregnant From FitBit Heart Rate Reading

The fact that FitBit fitness trackers can tell a person a lot of things about their activity level is already widely known. However, the fact that a man and his wife learned they were having a baby via their FitBit is a news story that’s making the rounds as something new. A Reddit user named YoungPTone found out about the Fitbit pregnancy, as reported by the Daily Mail, when he turned to the link-sharing site to ask others why they believed her FitBit was showing such a high heart rate reading for days.

Whether the FitBit was picking up the baby’s heartbeat in utero or just the woman’s elevated heart rate due to pregnancy isn’t known. However, the FitBit showed a heart rate so high that the FitBit placed the woman in the fat-burning zone for 10 hours. The Reddit user noted that with a FitBit reading that displayed such a high heart rate and fat-burning zone, his wife should have also burned a lot of calories. Therefore, the man assumed the FitBit was broken and in need of repair.

“My wife’s fitbit is showing her heartbeat being consistently high over the last few days. 2 days ago, a somewhat normal day, she logged 10 hours in the fat burning zone, which i would think to be impossible based on her activity level. Also her calories burned do seem accurate. I would imagine if she was in the fat burning zone she would burn a ton of calories, so its not lining up. I’m not sure if something is wrong with the sensor. is there a way to reset or recalibrate the device? Id like to try that before I contact customer service about a possible replacement.”

That’s when one intrepid FitBit user thought to ask about pregnancy as a possibility.

The fact that a FitBit might be able to tell a woman that she’s pregnant before she even realizes that she’s pregnant is just one of the many ways that technology is changing lives. Already, the FitBit Community forum is rife with questions from FitBit users about pregnancy settings and the like. With the popularity of FitBit users growing upwards, the number of women who discover they are pregnant via their FitBit readings will likely grow as well.

As reported by the Guardian, it ?was another Reddit user who asked about the possibility of pregnancy due to the elevated heart rate readings.

“Has she experienced anything really stressful in the last few days or is it a possibility she is pregnant?”

According to BuzzFeed, Ivonne and David are the names of the married couple who experienced finding out about their pregnancy via FitBit. They didn’t give the publication their last names, because they are only about four weeks into their pregnancy and haven’t told their family and friends yet. Many couples like to wait until at least 12 weeks into their pregnancy to share their happy news with everyone.

The FitBit showed Ivonne’s heart rate as high as 110 beats per minute, even while resting. The Mayo Clinic says that a normal resting heart rate runs from approximately 60 to 100 beats per minute, so that’s why Ivonne thought the FitBit was wrong and turned to David for help, who in turn headed to Reddit.

In the end, David thanked all the people on Reddit for their support, even those who asked wacky questions like whether he’s really the father or if it’s some marketing stunt for FitBit. David wrote that he doesn’t work for FitBit and that he’s really a guy who turned to Reddit for help with his wife’s FitBit — and got a lot more than he bargained for. That “a lot more” includes a pregnancy and the fact that he’ll have his first child in October 2016.
