Star-Spangled Gaga: Mother Monster Belts Another Hit, Confounds Prop Bet Takers

Looking every inch the superstar that she is, Lady Gaga underwent another transformation to a star-spangled Gaga as she readied herself to hit the high notes of the national anthem prior to Super Bowl 50. With red spangled eyeshadow and a custom spangled red Gucci suit, there was little doubt that Lady Gaga was ready to look the part, and she admitted she had envisioned a star spangled Gaga since she was a little girl.

“I get a chance to sing for all the athletes who have been working so hard their whole lives for this moment, the coaches, as well as the fans in the stands who are waiting for this moment, and I think it marks what being an American is all about,” Gaga said, according to the Sydney Morning Herald. “Working hard, and that being the ultimate payoff for the champion, is hard work.”

However, there are those who are left scrambling to crunch over/under numbers on prop bets, according to SB Nation. While a star-spangled Gaga conducted a breathless rendition of the song, bet takers were breathlessly waiting to see exactly how long Gaga’s rendition of the national anthem would be. The over/under was two minutes, 20 seconds. The problem for bet takers is that the star-spangled Gaga version seemed to have two endings: the first would leave the song at well under the 2:20 mark, while the second puts it at over.

Even more interesting is that each bet taker appears to be taking the rendition that the star-spangled Gaga belted out at Super Bowl 50 in different ways, so it would seem to depend on where a person made their bet as to whether or not they would actually pocket some winnings. According to Bovada LV, a website that claims to do “online betting better than none other,” the version of “The Star-Spangled Banner” that Lady Gaga sang came in at two minutes, nine seconds — well under the over/under of two minutes, 20 seconds.

While there are those who are questioning whether or not the “second ending” to the star-spangled version of the anthem that Lady Gaga sang counts as part of the length of the song, various gambling houses will no doubt say the winnings depend on how long they think the song actually was.

Regardless of how long the anthem was, Lady Gaga delivered a version of “The Star-Spangled Banner” that only Gaga can, and she was thrilled with her Super Bowl 50 appearance.

With columnists comparing the “Star-Spangled Banner” that Lady Gaga sang to the version that the late Whitney Houston sang years ago, it should come as no surprise that this version of the national anthem will be one of the most memorable for some time to come. To be sure, Lady Gaga has raised the bar, as she frequently does. From her appearance to her incredible rendition of the anthem, this was one star-spangled Gaga no one will forget anytime soon.

The accolades seem to be continuing for Lady Gaga as well. At the upcoming Grammy Awards on February 15, Lady Gaga will be performing a tribute to the late David Bowie. In addition to the “Star-Spangled Banner” belted out by Lady Gaga and performed in American Sign Language by Marlee Matlin, Super Bowl 50 also featured supercharged performances by Bruno Mars, Beyonce, and Coldplay. Beyonce’s performance may go down as memorable but for different reasons than the ones the star-spangled Gaga put towards the fans. Where Gaga wowed audiences with her passionate performance and Beyonce definitely gave an incredible performance, Beyonce is coming under fire for her politically charged appearance that seemed to pay homage to the Black Panthers.

When one thinks of Super Bowl 50, though, it will be all Star Spangled Banner and Lady Gaga, though. Folks will doubtless continue to cheer the Denver Broncos’ win, but the image of a star-spangled Gaga will resonate.
