‘It’s Nuts And Immoral’: Ted Cruz Bashes Suggestions Of Integrated Military Drafts, Women In Combat

Republican presidential hopeful Ted Cruz says that suggestions of an integrated military draft that would potentially place women in combat positions within the military via the draft process is “nuts.” He says that not only is it dangerous but it is also “immoral.” Cruz spoke out against plans to include women in the military draft system noting that he would never want to see his two daughters “forcibly put” into a foxhole with a “220-pound psychopath trying to kill them.” He says females being drafted into combat situations “doesn’t make sense at all.”

CNN reports that GOP presidential candidate Ted Cruz calls potentially making U.S. women eligible for drafting into the military “nuts” noting that women should not be required to sign up for the military draft like their male counterparts. Not only does Cruz say it is “nuts,” he goes so far as to call it “immoral.” He says he was thoroughly surprised when three Republican presidential candidates said that they would have no problem with females being part of the draft process.

“It was striking that three different people on that stage came out in support of drafting women into combat in the military. I have to admit, as I was sitting there listening to that conversation, my reaction was: Are you guys nuts?”

Cruz says that he is sick of “political correctness” and that it has no place in the military. He says that drafting women into combat positions within the military against their will is “wrong, it is immoral” and claims that if he becomes president he “ain’t doing it.”

“We have had enough with political correctness — especially in the military. Political correctness is dangerous, and the idea that we would draft our daughters, to forcibly bring them into the military and put them in close contact — I think is wrong, it is immoral, and if I am president, we ain’t doing it.”

Ted Cruz points to his own daughters as reasons he is against drafting women into the military against their will, noting that his daughters “are capable of doing anything in their hearts’ desire.” However, he says that he does not approve of the idea of his daughters being “forcibly put into a foxhold with a 220-pound psychopath trying to kill them.” He says it “doesn’t make sense at all” and that it won’t happen on his watch.

However, others disagree noting that women would make great addition to the military draft system and that if men are required to register that women should be required as well. General Mark Milley, the Army chief of staff, is one such backer of including women in the military draft. The talk of placing women into the military draft comes as all military positions, including combat positions, were opened up to female military members. The announcement of women being let into combat roles came in December by President Barack Obama’s defense secretary, Ash Carter.

The announcement was met with criticism with many fearing that the inclusion of women in combat roles could pave the way for a future full of quotas that required a certain percentage of women in combat groups which some say could be “dangerous.” However, the military has confirmed that there are no plans of quotas regarding gender but rather women with combat capabilities will be allowed into units they otherwise would not have had access to in the past for hand-to-hand combat.

What do you think of Ted Cruz’s position that women should not be included in the military draft? Would it be “immoral” and “dangerous” to force women to sign up for the draft alongside men?
