Anthony Weiner Is Back: Disgraced Pol Eyeballing Mayoral Bid [Report]

Anthony Weiner is reportedly on the comeback trail. Though he hasn’t confirmed his re-entry into the political arena, rumor has it he’s thinking of jumping back into the game.

Weiner-puns abound in an article for the NY Post that suggests the disgraced politician is itching to get back into the swing of things (does that count as a pun?) and is currently sitting on a $4.5 million campaign fund. Sources say he is “seriously considering” a mayor run when the office frees up next year. The outspoken and shameless Queens Democrat is apparently “desperate” to thrust back into politics, though he also has a back-up plan position as a public advocate. He has reportedly been in contact with former staffers, trying to get them to come back to work for him.

“I’ve heard he is seriously thinking about getting into a citywide race in 2013 and would like it to be mayor,” said a source with ties to Weiner. “In his mind, he’s trying to figure out how to run for mayor.”

Unfortunately, it isn’t so easy to jump back into the public eye when the memory of the congressman’s sexting scandal is still so fresh in the minds of the populace. “The general feeling is that you can’t text pictures of your penis to a girl, then lie about it, then get kicked out of the House and then run for mayor right after,” said a political consultant. “But people believe there is a way for him to run for a lesser office.”

Still, he could sit out the fallout with his public service back-up plan, which Newser calls “public-service purgatory.” At that post, “Weiner could do further penance while getting ready to run for mayor in 2017.” The only downside is that his $4.5 million “war chest” won’t be eligible for public match after 2013.

In any case, Weiner is reportedly happily doing “daddy duty” while he finds himself in the soul-searching no-man’s land known as unemployment.
