NBA star Jason Kidd was traded to the New York Knicks this week and following that announcement was an unwelcome guest, a DWI charge following a single-vehicle accident in Southampton.

Kidd reportedly crashed his vehicle into a telephone poll which led to his eventual arrest after police arrived on the scene in New York.

Jason Kidd was the only passenger inside his vehicle when the accident occurred at 1:56 AM.

Police who arrived on the scene described Jason Kidd’s appearance as “intoxicated.” A police spokesperson announced that the all-star point guard was arraigned on a misdemeanor DWI charge and released on his own recognizance.

Jason Kidd on July 5 agreed to a three-year, $9.5 million contract with the New York Knicks, just one season after helping the Dallas Mavericks win an NBA title.

This is not the first time Jason Kidd has been in trouble with the law, in 2001 he pled guilty to a domestic violence charge that involved his ex-wife Joumana.

A 10-time NBA All-Star, Kidd decided to move over to the New York Knicks to mentor the emerging Jeremy Lin, the teams breakout star from last season who has yet to sign a new contract with the New York Knicks.

Jason Kidd, the NBA and the New York Knicks have yet to comment about the DWI arrest.

According to Sag Harbor attorney Eddie Burke Jr.:

“We await further discovery from the district attorney’s office.”
