‘Suicide Squad’ New Teaser: Will The Joker Or Harley Quinn Be The Main Character?

Suicide Squad released another teaser video on their official Instagram account yesterday. The new 15-second promo includes Jared Leto’s Joker lying down, surrounded by knives and blades, laughing maniacally.

With the Suicide Squad scheduled to hit theaters on August 5, 2016, fans of the DC film were finally treated to a new full-length trailer, which gives a series of new footage, making way for speculation.

Suicide Squad’s new trailer not only features the Joker’s insanity and signature last laugh but also sheds some light on the other characters. Mainly, the promo focuses on Margot Robbie’s character, Harley Quinn, who seems to have got more footage when compared to Jared Leto’s Joker.

This has led fans to believe that she will have a major role in the film.

In support that notion, the International Business Times suggested that David Ayer may delve deeper and use the Suicide Squad movie to narrate Harley’s backstory, which is intertwined with that of the Joker.

In the comic books, the story is that the Joker tossed Quinn into chemicals in order to transform her appearance in a similar way to his. Ace Chemicals (the chemical plant where the Joker became the Joker, as he falls into a vat of chemicals) was included in leaked photo from the set of the Suicide Squad in July 2015.

The Joker’s full role in the Suicide Squad is still up for interpretation, as he shows up only in a brief glimpse at the end. That leaves his character and involvement in the hands of fan’s imagination for now.

“It’s a scary character to tackle,” says Suicide Squad Director David Ayer of Joker in an interview with USA Today about Jared Leto’s portrayal of The Joker.”

“This iteration of him, people will realize there really is a continuity of history — there is a lot of respect for what the Joker represents, who he is as a character. He is the best-known villain in fiction, so there’s an incredible responsibility there to also be faithful to what he is but at the same time push him into this next world, next time, next phase.”

Ayer added that other people on the set of the Suicide Squad filming kept their distance from Leto when he was in 24/7 Joker mode. Leto even freaked out Ayer a few times.

“Big time. The hairs stand up on the back of your neck,” says the director, who grew up on the old 1960s Batman TV show. “If you’re a Batman fan, you have to love/hate the Joker because he’s the best nemesis ever. Just to have him on one of my film sets, it was a very memorable thing for me.”

Created by Robert Kanigher and Ross Andru back in 1959, the Suicide Squad team has included countless DC villains among its ranks, including Deadshot, Captain Boomerang, Bane, Killer Frost, Poison Ivy, Count Vertigo, Deathstroke, and Harley Quinn reports Super Hero Hype.

According to IMDb, Suicide Squad boasts a star-studded cast, with Will Smith as Deadshot, Jared Leto as the Joker, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, Jai Courtney as Boomerang, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Adam Beach as Slipknot, Karen Fukuhara as Katana, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc, Jay Hernandez as El Diablo.

There’s also mystery roles for Ike Barinholtz, Scott Eastwood, Raymond Olubowale, Alex Meraz, Jim Parrack, and Common.
