Drake Premieres New Track ‘Summer Sixteen’ On OVO Sound Radio, Confirms ‘VFT6’ Release Date

Drake hosted the 14th episode of OVO Sound Radio via Apple Music’s Beats 1 Radio on January 30, giving fans an exclusive first-listen to his new track “Summer Sixteen” while also addressing the anticipation for his upcoming album, Views From The 6.

Drake kicked off the live radio show promptly at 6 p.m. EST with the announcement that he would be debuting his new track, “Summer Sixteen,” during the show’s two-hour broadcast while also promising to address “this Views thing” prior to the end of the segment.

Prior to the show, Drake took to Instagram to confirm speculation suggesting that he would be dropping a new track during OVO Sound Radio’s broadcast.

“World Premiere on OVO Sound Radio in 25 mins on @applemusic. Art by Filip Pagowski,” Drake wrote alongside the cover art for his new single, “Summer Sixteen.”

In addition, OVO Sound Radio began tweeting out hints suggesting that an announcement regarding Drake’s impending Views From The 6 would be coming at some point during the program, adding the cryptic hashtag, “#GetAGlimpseOfTheView,” to a teaser photo of the segment prior to its start.

Drake dropped “Summer Sixteen” approximately 30 minutes into the show, instantly sending OVO Sound Radio to the top of the trending topics on Twitter.

In the heated track, which looped a total of four times during the segment, Drake raps about getting his revenge with lyrics like, “I’m out here looking for revenge/Playing dirty not clean,” and “I could have killed you the first time,” and “I use to wanna be on Rocafella…Then I turned into Jay.”

Drake referenced several fellow hip hop artists in his track, including Chris Brown, Jay Z, and Kanye West, while also taking some not-so-subtle shots at Meek Mill, who recently released a freestyle version of Drake and Future’s “I’m The Plug” in which he continues to diss Drake for allegedly using a ghostwriter.

Following the loop of his third Meek Mill diss track, Drake went on to share some more new music by giving a nod to Rihanna’s recently released Anti album with her track “Same Ol’ Mistakes.”

Following Rihanna’s track, Drake reflected on his mix for the segment by noting, “A lot going on in that one, you know. Definitely some moments in there.”

In regard to his highly-anticipated fourth studio album, Drake revealed that “Summer Sixteen” is “just setting the tone” for Views From The 6 and that they’re working “overtime” to get the album finished.

Drake also confirmed a tentative release date for Views, noting that he’ll give a finalized date when it gets closer to the time of the album’s release.

“The album will be coming in April 2016, I’ll give you a date later on. Date and details. Just know for now that we’re working. We’re working. We’re ready for anything.”

Drake also provided an explanation as to the significance of the April release date for his new album, noting that the date corresponds with the area code of his native Toronto, as it will be released in the fourth month of 2016 (416).

The news comes on the heels of reports that Meek Mill is also planning on dropping his long-awaited Dreamchasers 4 record in April as well.

According to Hip Hop DX, Meek Mill’s recently released 4/4 EP also corresponds to the release date of his upcoming album, which is currently set for April 4, 2016. With Drake and Meek Mill set to drop their new albums within the same month, it looks like there may be even more diss tracks on the way.

Drake’s new single, “Summer Sixteen,” is currently available on iTunes.
