‘Star Wars: Episode 8’ Spoilers: Mark Hamill May Have Revealed Big Hint About Rey’s Identity

Star Wars: Episode 8 may have just gotten a huge spoiler about the identity of Rey, with Mark Hamill sharing what could be a big secret about her lineage.

[Warning: Star Wars: The Force Awakens spoilers are ahead]

The latest movie in the Star Wars series brought and new hero with a similar backstory. Rey, who was thrust into the fight between the Rebels and the First Order, begins to discover her powers as the film goes on and is set to be the protagonist of the next two movies in the series.

It’s a familiar story to anyone who knows with the Star Wars history. Rey shares many of the same attributes as the original hero, Luke Skywalker, including a powerful connection to the force, a desert home planet, and some mysterious lineage.

There are clues throughout Star Wars: The Force Awakens that Rey may actually be the daughter of Luke Skywalker.

Buzzfeed shares one of the major points.

“Rey is drawn to find the lightsaber in Maz Kanata’s castle, and just by her touching it, it sparks psychometric visions from its past – Vader and Luke’s duel on Cloud City – and her own past and future, with images of her being abandoned on Jakku and facing Kylo Ren later in the film. The other visions in this sequence involve Kylo Ren and his Knights of Ren killing Luke’s young Jedi apprentices. This – along with Kylo seeming vaguely aware of who Rey is throughout the movie – suggests that a young Rey was present at this event, and was the reason she had to be hidden on Jakku.”

But Mark Hamill himself may be throwing cold water on this theory and offering a major spoiler for Star Wars: Episode 8. In a Q&A session online, Hamill revealed that Luke Skywalker’s sexuality was meant to remain ambiguous — which might make it difficult to make him Rey’s father.

There is another prevailing point about the identity of Rey that could be a better fit in light of Hamill’s revelation about Luke Skywalker. The first is that she is a descendant of Obi Wan Kenobi, who also shares a British accent and an affinity for wearing robes. There are plenty of other points that support this theory, including a flashback that already connected the two during Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Movie Pilot reported the following.

“During the scene in which Rey handles Luke’s old, blue lightsaber — which, perhaps crucially, was in Obi-Wan’s possession for many years — at Maz Kanata’s castle, she has a terrifying vision of Kylo and the Knights of Ren. During that vision she hears the voice of Obi-Wan talking to her.”

“‘Rey, these are your first steps.’ Do Obi-Wan’s words represent some kind of long-buried memory from Rey’s youth?”

It’s already known that Luke Skywalker will play a much bigger role in the next movie. Early Star Wars: Episode 8 spoilers indicate that Mark Hamill has been very involved in early filming. The Irish Examiner reported in September that filming for Star Wars: Episode 8 had been taking place on the island of Skellig Michael, which was the scene of the final meeting between Rey and Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Unfortunately, fans who want to learn Rey’s identity may not find out in any of the Star Wars: Episode 8 spoilers. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Episode 9 director Colin Trevorrow gave a strong indication that Rey’s identity may not be revealed until the third movie in the series. That means waiting until 2019 to find out just where Rey came from.
