Brie Larson: 10 Little-Known Facts About The Oscar-Nominated Actress

Brie Larson has been nominated for her very first Academy Award for her portrayal of Ma in the movie Room.

During her climb to the top of the industry, Larson has proven to be an intriguing and versatile talent that is truly impressive. Check out these amazing facts about Brie Larson.

1. Heavy reports that Brie Larson sings. Not only does she sing, but she also released an album in 2005 called Finally Out of P.E., a name that came from her personal experience.

“My P.E. teacher didn’t like me at all, which was hard to deal with cuz I was usually such a teachers’ pet. So when I found out I got my record deal, I was like, ‘Yes, I’m finally out of P.E.'”

2. Swide reports that Brie Larson discovered the hobby of typography when she was filming Short Term 12. It was her way to relieve the tension she was feeling between scenes.

“I have graph paper and gel pens and I would do the alphabet: just do ‘a’ over and over again until I got it perfect and then go to ‘b’ and then ‘c’. I definitely look like a weirdo with scraps of paper everywhere and the alphabet over and over again. But I can’t read a book and then jump into this character, so it ends up being the perfect thing for me: it’s creative, it keeps my mind active and you get something at the end.”

3. Brie Larson isn’t her real name, but Refinery 29 reveals that the inspiration for her name came from her love of American Girl dolls. Her full name is Brianne Sidonie Desaulniers, but her stage name of Larson came from her American Girl pioneer doll Kirsten Larson.

4. French is Brie Larson’s first language. English came as she grew up, to the expense of her French.

“It’s something that as I got older and I started learning more English, I started losing more and more of my French speaking. But it is in there and I do know some of it still.”

5. Brie Larson was considered for the role of Juno in the movie Juno, which ultimately went to Ellen Page. Larson was also considered for the role of Olivia Thirlby in Thirteen, which went to Evan Rachel Wood.

6. Brie Larson has another fun hobby. She is into mycology, which is the biology of fungi.

“That may seem like the strangest, but I’m passionate about it.”

Her Twitter bio labels her as a mushroom forager.

“Actor / Mushroom Forager / SCUBA Certified Diver / Scientific American Subscriber / Dog Mom”

7. Brie Larson is also a director and has done two short films, The Arm and Weighting. The Arm won the Special Jury Award for Comedic Storytelling at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival. In 2013, Larson said she didn’t see herself acting for much longer because she was moving toward writing and directing. Clearly that was before her performance in Room.

“I can’t see myself acting for much longer, at least not full time. I’ve started fading out of that and moving towards writing/directing.”

8. Apparently, Brie Larson really knows how to multitask. Who else can eat dinner while in the shower? Although, Larson revealed to Conan O’Brien it didn’t go well.

9. Brie Larson really loves Star Wars and this is what helped Jacob Tremblay, who plays her son in Room, get comfortable with her.

“She likes Star Wars, like me. So that’s why we’re best friends.”

10. Brie Larson is a lover of film, including the likes of Fried Green Tomatoes and Gone with the Wind, which she had fallen in love with by the time she was 8 years old.
