Leonardo DiCaprio Meets The Pope On Issues Of Climate Change

Leonardo DiCaprio is not only a film icon and pal to some of the biggest names in Hollywood and the entertainment industry, he is also dedicated to saving the planet. The heartthrob and notable actor had the opportunity to meet with another iconic figure who has similar concerns about the environment and the well-being of humanity — Pope Francis.

Vanity Fair elaborates in regards to the meeting between the Revenant actor and the pope.

“DiCaprio had an audience with Pope Francis Thursday morning, and though there was no information about their agenda, connecting the founder of the green-minded Leonardo DiCaprio foundation with the author of the environment-focused encyclical Laudato Si isn’t too hard.”

There were no “splashy” photos snapped of the meeting, yet the conversation between DiCaprio and the Pope was almost certainly about environmental issues.

As VF notes, DiCaprio is not the first A-lister to meet with his holiness. Angelina Jolie was in his presence previously, as were others.

“Angelina Jolie shook his hand after a Vatican screening of her film Unbroken, which featured a character of strong Catholic faith, and everyone from Jennifer Hudson to Mark Wahlberg performed in his presence during his visit to the United States last fall.”

The meeting was reportedly quite short, and although the actual words communicated have not been release, the topic is clear. Us Weekly reports on the duration and intentions of both parties.

“The 15-minute meeting took place at the Vatican in Vatican City around 11:15 a.m. local time. The spokesperson would not release details on what the pair talked about, but it’s likely that the conversation centered around climate change — a topic that’s important to both DiCaprio, 41, and Pope Francis.”

DiCaprio’s career continues to blaze due to his incredible performances, including his most recent role in the gritty and sublimely beautiful film The Revenant. It’s obviously an added bonus that the actor is able to gain the endorsement of the head of the Catholic church on the issues that he is so much an advocate for.

The publication relays what benefit the meeting will result in for the star and Pope Francis.

“[W]e have to take Leo and Francis’s face-to-face for what it was: a meeting between two like-minded crusaders who clearly think they can be more powerful by teaming up. If the sheer power of celebrity could raise CO2 levels in the atmosphere, we’d be well on our way to salvation already.”

During the brief meeting between Leonardo and Pope Francis, the actor appeared at ease and very respectful while offering a token of gratitude to his holiness for taking the time to meet with him. A spokesperson for the Vatican shared a brief description of what was witnessed in the exchange between the pope and DiCaprio, as Us Weekly shares.

“The actor gave the pope a book of art from the Dutch Renaissance painter Hieronymus Bosch, and at the end of the encounter, DiCaprio kissed the pope’s ring and, in Italian, thanked the Holy Father for meeting with him.”

Us also reports that the Oscar nominee recently donated $15 million from his foundation to projects around the world involving conservation. Additionally, in 2015, Pope Francis called for all wealthier nations to lend a hand in solving the problems of climate change in a papal letter to bishops in the Roman Catholic Church.

Clearly, Leo has stepped up in response to his holiness’ call to the wealthier nations and has demonstrated his dedication to finding a solution to the climate change issues the planet is facing.
