DeWayne Bunch, a Republican, was elected to the House in 2010 and represented the House’s 82nd District (Whitley and Laurel counties) through the 2011 legislative session.

In April of 2011, Bunch, 50, was injured while trying to break up a fight between two students at Whitley County High School in Williamsburg, where he taught math for 17 years.

During the ordeal, Bunch was knocked unconscious after hitting his head on the cafeteria floor after being punched.

He later resigned his House seat. His wife, Regina Bunch, was elected at a special election to replace him.

Following Bunch’s death, Michael Goins, Communications Director with the Kentucky House Republican Caucus, released a statement saying, “Our thoughts and prayers are with Regina, her family and all those who knew and loved Dewayne as they deal with his passing.”

Kentucky House Speaker Greg Stumbo also released a statement, saying, “DeWayne showed tremendous potential as a legislator, and his wife Regina has done an outstanding job in serving the remainder of his term.”

The two boys involved in the fight, ages 15 and 16 at the time, were each charged with one count of first-degree assault and two counts of third-degree assault. There is no word so far on what new charges they may face now that Bunch has passed away.
