Quentin Tarantino Loved ‘The Intern’

Quentin Tarantino loves to talk movies.

And since he is one of the most vital writers and directors of the last 25 year, people love to hear what he has to say. But sometimes Quentin Tarantino’s remarks are seen as divisive, which is particularly true with what he came out with last week.

Tarantino is currently doing the rounds to promote The Hateful Eight, his eighth film as a writer and director. During his talk with New Zealand’s Metro Magazine, Tarantino was asked about the lack of female directors in Hollywood.

The question made a specific reference to Tarantino’s involvement in The Hollywood Reporter‘s roundtable discussion towards the end of 2015, which saw the Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs director discuss his work alongside Danny Boyle, Ridley Scott, Tom Hooper, David O. Russell, and Alejandro G. Inarritu.

His attempt to answer this question ultimately led him to praise one of the least recognized films of 2015, with Tarantino admitting that he adored The Intern, which was written and directed by Nancy Meyers and starred Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro.

Quentin Tarantino started by explaining, “It does seem to be to some degree there’s a boom or bust aspect when it comes to Hollywood when it comes to female directors. There becomes an era when there’s a lot working then that settles down and there’s a dry period—but frankly, maybe I’m just talking s*** because the thing is there are female directors. Maybe they’re not being the ones that are being asked to be on The Hollywood Reporter roundtable.”

After starting his answer, Quentin Tarantino then decided to make the brave admission about his love for The Intern, explaining, “One of my favorite movies this last year was Nancy Meyers’ The Intern. They’re not considering that for the Oscars even though I think Robert De Niro gave one of the best performances this year in that movie. I thought the script was actually one of her best. Right up there with It’s Complicated. They’re not asking her to be part of the discussion.

The Intern actually fared quite well for Warner Bros. when it was released back in September. Made for just $35 million, it went on to haul in $194.1 million at the worldwide box office, while even its reviews were relatively impressive, as it currently holds a rating of 61% on Rotten Tomatoes.

This isn’t the first time that Quentin Tarantino has spoken glowingly about a film from 2015. Around Christmas time, just before The Hateful Eight was originally released into cinemas, the director confirmed that he was a huge fan of Mad Max: Fury Road, the fourth instalment to the Mad Max franchise, which saw Tom Hardy replace Mel Gibson as the leading character of the series.

Speaking to the French magazine Premiere, via Slash Film, Quentin Tarantino was asked about his favorite film of 2015, to which he then explained, “I got a print of Mad Max on 35mm and I watched it in my house, and I had it all weekend and I ended up watching it three different times, and I resisted seeing it for a while because I was like, ‘Mad Max without Mel Gibson? Forget that!’ In a world where Mel Gibson exists, how can you cast Tom Hardy? So, I even wanted to get all defiant about it and #NotMyMax. Then I saw the movie and, ‘Okay, it’s terrific,’ and he’s pretty good in it, I have to admit.”
