Is This The End For ‘Castle?’

ABC’s Castle is now in its 8th season, but will eight be the last? Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic each have a one year contract, and with no sign of re-upping, it seems that a lack of contracts along with flagging viewership will likely mean that season 8 is the last season for Castle. Right now the show is on a hiatus, but when it comes back, will the writers wrap it up?

According to the Inquisitr, Castle has firmly “jumped the shark,” and is winding down to end the series with the end of the season. The fun storylines of a couple working together to solve crimes has now been reduced to a couple who just can’t get it right. Castle and Beckett married, only to be torn apart once again. That and the addition of new supporting characters has left viewers in an unfamiliar area, which is boredom.

Hollywood Life is reporting that ABC Network president Paul Lee says contract negations are coming around with leads Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic.

“We’d love for Castle to keep going for many years to come,” Paul said. If the show does get picked up for season 9, Castle could see changes if the show loses one of its main stars. “There are a lot of conversations about how we can do that…there’s lots of good ideas in there. So I am feeling optimistic that we have a lot of good ideas,” he continued.

According to CarterMatt, the second part of the 8th season of Castle will be delayed, which is is fueling additional rumors. ABC seems happier to show the Bachelor Live rather than get on with the rest of the season of Castle. The network wants to get on with the Bachelor experiment, because for sweeps, it is a better bet.

CarterMatt is also revealing that it is possible that instead of a 9th season ofCastle, spin-off ideas are being tossed around. Some of the ideas surround supporting characters.

Alexis, P.I. – A very ‘Nancy Drew’ sort of series revolving around a young woman trying to make a name for herself solving crimes. Maybe you can get Fillion or Katic back for a cameo here and there, and you can move her to a new city and surround her with a new cast (maybe you keep Hayley). We’d be intrigued, but the issue with all of these ideas remains the same: You have to find a way to get a ton of new viewers interested since the fraction of the Castle audience that would watch probably would not carry the show.”

And to continue the “buddies solving crime theme,” Ryan and Esposito as a new series might be worth a try.

Ryan and Esposito – They get reassigned, or they decide to open a separate business where they help solve crimes that allows them to make a little bit more money. They have great chemistry, but how do you market the show to non-Castle fans? It’s tricky.”

Deadline believes that a 9th season is unlikely for Castle. The Showrunners, including Alexi Hawley, believe that if the show were to end, they have a lot of loose ends to tie up.

“This season was a little bit of a transition, getting Castle into the PI office and setting that world up for him to give him that drive,” Hawley said. “We wanted to wrap up a lot of the threads of different conspiracies, Beckett’s mother’s murder, Castle’s missing time. We wanted by the end of Season 8 to have gotten through all those — hopefully in a compelling and satisfying way — so Season 9 can be more about the case of the week, going back to the fun of solving the case of the week and not have the luggage of past conspiracies.”

Hawley believes there is still a lot to say for Castle and Beckett, and so if season 9 is a go, it will be exciting.
