Young Thug is currently one of the most controversial hip hop artists in the world. And right now, insinuations about him being gay seem to be rife. However, this can mainly be attributed to his don’t-care weird style of expression, singing and dressing.
Starting with his controversial posts on social media that have led to gay allegations, he has on many occasions used the words “bae” and “lover” to refer to his male friends and at one time this also included Birdman. But back in 2014, he offered the following answer as to why he referred to them as such. The following was his statement.
“It’s a language. There’s nothing stupid or fruity going on. It’s the way we talk, it’s the way we live. Those are my baes, those are my lovers, it’s whatever you want to call it.”
This was as reported by Watch Loud.
However, last year, he fueled related rumors again after gracing the Dazed Magazine cover donning a Gucci dress, which is in some pages of the magazine was revealed as a crop top. Moreover, he donned a Walter Van Bierendock see through top featuring the words “Warning Explicit Beauty” in another picture in the mag.
Currently, the controversies from this seem to be getting out of hand. Delving a bit into details, his fans in the US and most of the western world seem to have no problem accepting that he is a talented artiste with a weird side, but in other parts of the world where homophobia is alive and aspects of it are frowned upon by the general public, complications may sometimes arise.
Such is the case with Jamaica and recently, Popcaan, a popular Jamaican artist who had previously collaborated with him for the “I Know There’s Gonna Be (Good Times)” song publicly admitted that he is unlikely to do another collabo with Young Thug, saying that he is ‘shaky’ and that Jamaicans prefer “straight”.
This was in reference to the gay controversies surrounding Young Thug. He also revealed that he wasn’t in the studio with Young Thug when recording the song, an aspect which he seemed to highlight so as to squash any direct association with the rapper. This is as reported by Jamaica Star.
The following was his actual statement.
“I was the first person to record on the track, I actually did a full song. They told me that an artiste would be featured on the song. After that, I was told that it would be Young Thug. It took awhile for it to go through because we in Jamaica, we have to run people file, it wasn’t really my choice because Young Thug kinda shake and yuh know a we seh straight.”
Popcaan was however upbeat about his relationship with Drake, which he describes as that of mutual respect. The following was his exact description.
“Drake and OVO is straight up family. Drake is the one who said OVO Unruly. Drake views me as Drizzy Drake in Jamaica, and I view him as a young youth that is doing well in the game. He tweeted songs from Only Man She Want and lines from Get Gyal Easy. He also asked us to come to OVO Fest and he was listening to my mixtape there. He told me that he can relate to things that I sing.”
Jamaica has a long history of homophobia, with Dancehall music being one of the main contributors.
That said, Young Thug currently seems to be making an effort to kill the gay rumors and in his last song, he included a line reiterating that he is not gay. The following was the line.
“Green and red motherf*ckin’ flag / I dress like a prince, not a fag / No, I’m not gay when I hit it though they rate me.”
