Chumbawamba To Split Up After 30 Tubthumping Years

Chumbawamba has just announced that they are going to split up at the end of this year.

The British band best known for their 1997 hit “Tubthumping” announced on its website that the band members were parting ways.

Chumbawamba writes:

“That’s it then, it’s the end…. With neither a whimper, a bang or a reunion. Thirty years of ideas and melodies, endless meetings and European tours, press releases, singalong choruses and Dada sound poetry, finally at an end…. We felt we’d got to a point where what we did as a band – and specifically the writing, recording, touring cycle – wasn’t doing justice to what Chumbawamba set out to do in the first place…. Eventually the rest of our lives got in the way and we couldn’t commit the time and enthusiasm that the band demanded.”

The band may be known to some as a “one hit wonder” but Chumbawamba released over 15 albums during their 30 year career. The Guardian reports that the band released their final album this January and will play a few concerts this year before hanging it up for good.

The band writes:

“Thirty years of being snotty, eclectic, funny, contrary and just plain weird. What a privilege, and what a good time we’ve had.”

Were you a fan of Chumbawamba? Are you more surprised that the band is still together playing music, or that “Tubthumping” was released 15-years-ago?

Here’s the band’s biggest hit, “Tubthumping.”

I love one hit wonders like this…and back in the 1980's, this tune played forever. Love it. If you didn't grow up in the 80's, I feel sorry for you. Absolute best time to listen to music.

  3. I thought they broke up years ago LOL.

How can a band with one member left from the 'classic' line up and who have a revolving door of other people for the last decade be said to be splitting up.

I guess they got knocked down one too many times.

  9. I guess they got knocked down but couldn't get up again.

  11. First Ween, now this! Damn, the musical landscape looks bleak, LMFAO! (that was meant as a stab to the band, LMFAO, not Ween or Chumbawamba. Love their SHHhh! album, as it was named in the states, censorship in America, I know, un-heard of, right.)

umm this song wasnt released in the 1980s…this song was released in 1997.

  13. Eight comments on this article should tell someone all they need to know about this band. I only know they are breaking up because a friend of mine posted this article on FB because of a weird coincidence. I also have one of their biggest songs in my collection because I'm a music nerd and DJ.

That's a kind of silly assertion, mtnndeww – I like 80's music too, but every decade has its good music, and people tend to like what's going on when *they* are growing up, no matter when that is.

Wow, they've been toiling in near obscurity for the past 14 years. I would've tried to have some more success or at least given up long before now.

  17. … they'll get back up again :)

  18. Are you seriously comparing Chumbawamba with U2?

  19. ahh looks like they've been knocked down…question is WILL THEY get up again?

  20. I guess this means the remaining members split up officially. Chumba had actually been broken up for some time and a few of the remaining members released a CD a few years ago.

  21. so they got knocked down…and they won't be getting back up again?

    They still suck. Neckface.

  23. I'm probably the oldest Chumbawamba fan in the Solar System, so I hate to see them go. Each of their recent albums had a few standout songs. They will now join a short list of acts that I would have enjoyed seeing in person, but won't have the chance – John Lennon, John Fahey,, George Harrison…gee, that is a short list. Best of luck to all of them in their future endeavors.

I worry about when they become zombies. Because you'll knock them down, and they'll get up again.

  25. No way!

I am more shocked that they were still together.

  27. Alyson Harrison I think she got knocked down in the 80's but didnt get up again until 1997.

  28. U2 is only famous/popular or thought of as greats bec of Pop-frickin-culture. They are good, but they are easily NOT amongst the greatest, responsibly so. Chumbawamba had decent music, but too political to attract interest from the masses! U2 is so frickin overrated!!!

  29. I LOVED That OneHitWonder! Drinking 4 diferent drinks about 4times in 3minutes sounds cool.

They were bigger overseas, most of their songs are political pieces about Ireland.

  32. Hootie and the Blowfish should be next. They blow.
