Ana Gonzalez-Angulo, George Blumenschein: ‘Snapped’ Profiles Houston Doctor’s Sexual Affair, Which Almost Killed Him After Coffee Poisoning

Ana Gonzalez-Angulo, the well-known breast cancer research doctor who poisoned her lover’s coffee, makes the next case of Snapped on the Oxygen Network. This week’s episode exposes a malignant love and an attraction so potentially fatal that a highly-respected physician would risk it all. Ana Gonzalez-Angulo was arrested and charged with tainting Dr. George Blumenschein’s coffee in January, 2013. Dr. George Blumenschein, who also worked at the Texas hospital with Angulo, survived the attack. Ana Gonzalez-Angulo was sentenced to 10 years in prison. Some of the commentary on Sunday’s show will be given by prosecutors Justin Keiter and Nathan Hennigan, defense attorney Derek Hollingsworth, toxicologist Dr. Stacey Hall, and reporter Brian Rogers of the Houston Chronicle.

News headlines exploded after it became common knowlege that renowned breast cancer researcher Dr. Ana Gonzalez-Angulo had spiked her secret lover’s coffee with ethylene glycol, a dangerous substance that can be found in antifreeze. People who know Dr. Ana Gonzalez-Angulo say that she was participating in ground-breaking research that was getting nationwide attention, and they cannot understand how she could risk losing it all over an affair. It’s also unclear how Ana Gonzalez-Angulo thought the doctors wouldn’t eventually detect the poison, a fact she should have known — after all, she’s a doctor.

Snapped will point out that love makes people do crazy things. It appears that the sex was just too good for Dr. Ana Gonzalez-Angulo to give up. According to law enforcement officials, Angulo became so jealous of George Blumenschein’s relationship with his longtime girlfriend, fellow Houston doctor Yvette Toney, that she wanted to do him harm. Court records indicate that Blumenschein lived with Dr. Yvette Toney, aka Evette Toney, for years and was trying to have a child with him, according to ABC News.

Another detail to look for while you’re watching Snapped is the fact that both Yvette Toney and Ana Gonzalez-Angulo were present in the emergency room with Blumenschein when he suddenly became ill. Dr. Toney told the doctors that Blumenschein’s routine that day was the same as always. He got up early and went to work. But, what she didn’t know at the time was that he secretly visited with Ana Gonzalez-Angulo and engaged in sex that day, according to KHOU. He also had some of her special Colombian coffee that he said tasted sweet.

When he became sick just a few hours later, Blumenschein did not want to go to the emergency room, leading some to speculate that he was trying to avoid having all of the dirty details come out publicly. Others say that the doctor was irrational due to the effects of the poison. Still, the medical doctors were baffled about his condition. Doctors ran a series of tests but could not pinpoint what was making his kidneys fail.

Dr. George Blumenschein had confided in his girlfriend that he believed that Gonzalez-Angulo may have been poisoning him. He eventually admitted to her that he had also been engaging in an affair with her, which included regular meet-ups in hotel rooms for oral sex, according to Snapped.

At trial, Dr. Evette Toney took the witness stand, where she indicated that she was completely duped by George, who tried to reassure her that nothing was going on between him and Ana. In fact, he went on to say that he was not sexually attracted to her at all — which was a lie. Here is an interesting quote from the Daily Mail.

“He never told me that they were traveling as much together. He would mention that she’s at this meeting. But not that they were traveling together. I purchased a watch for George. She purchased the exact same watch for herself. I purchased some luggage for George. She purchased the exact same luggage for herself.”

The affair and the antifreeze-coffee poisoning scandal left Dr. Toney feeling humiliated and embarrassed. Yet, she decided not to end the relationship, she testified in 2014. And this can’t be confirmed, but a quick check online revealed that there is a baby registry for Dr. Evette Tony and George Blumenschein at Pottery Barn Kids with a due date of April 2015.

To try to get an understanding of the case, you’ll definitely want to tune in to Oxygen’s Snapped this Sunday, January 24, at 8 p.m. Inquisitr wrote about a prior Snapped episode, involving the case of Hollywood couple Brynn and Phil Hartman.
