When Square Enix announced that Final Fantasy VII would be re-released on the PC, there was a bit of confusion about the game’s “Character Booster” feature, which some–myself included–figured could be some sort of microtransaction-based system.

Not so, says Square Enix.

“No, the Character Booster will not cost real money to use,” a Square Enix representative told Kotaku. “We’ll have final pricing info on the game to share soon, but we can confirm that there will be no microtransactions for the upcoming re-release of Final Fantasy VII on PC.”

Square Enix hasn’t gone into a whole lot of detail on how the Character Booster feature works in the Final Fantasy VII re-release, but we do know that you’ll be able to use it to boost your character’s stats, and even your money (gil). Somehow.

Unfortunately, we also don’t know exactly when the Final Fantasy VII re-release is supposed to be, well, released. So far, Square Enix is only willing to say that the game is “coming soon” to PC, and that it will be released exclusively through Square Enix’s online store.
