Padres fan Travis Decker had a bittersweet baseball moment at a recent game, experiencing part of what many baseball watchers hope for, but at a relatively inopportune moment.

Decker was a casualty of constant updating on Facebook — as TV host Bill Maher recently said in reference to America changing, we are basically the same “Kentucky-fried country,” except we’re always looking down at our texts. And the Padres fan indeed was doing just that at a baseball game, so absorbed in his Facebook feed that he was nailed by a foul ball to the shoulder as he checked-in.

But we are all Travis Decker. This July 4th, as a matter of fact, I was watching the fireworks displays, cursing my inability to get decent footage of the sights and mentally cursing everyone around me for chatting over my footage. Then I realized I was missing the actual fireworks, and that the people who were there were just talking like they were supposed to, and that I was basically missing the actual event in order to get pictures of it for Facebook.

It sounds like the Padres fan smacked in the shoulder by the foul ball was in much the same place. While it used to be we’d go to a ball game and tell everyone we were going to be busy for a few hours, Decker says he was posting a check-in when he was caught off-guard by the baseball playing he’d come to witness in person.

The sheepish fan explains:

“I was sitting there looking at my telephone. I was trying to post onto Facebook to say that I was here at the ballpark and check-in.”

So be aware, everyone — no Facebooking at ballgames, lest you want to get punched right in the face with a baseball. Watch Travis Decker explain his Padres foul ball mishap, below.
