Either Taylor Swift Or Kendrick Lamar Could Sweep Grammy Awards
The Grammy Awards will air on Monday, February 15. According to Entertainment Weekly, CBS just announced the first batch of performers.
“CBS announced the first batch of performers for the Grammy Awards: Adele, a 10-time award winner, Kendrick Lamar, who is nominated for 11 statues this year, The Weeknd, up for seven this year, and Little Big Town, who won for ‘Pontoon’ three years ago and is currently nominated for four awards for ‘Girl Crush,’ will all play during the ceremony on Monday, Feb. 15.”
People have been going back and forth predicting who would earn a Grammy. The consensus seems to be that both Taylor Swift and Kendrick Lamar will be the big winners of the night. GoldDerby tries to predict what could happen on Grammy night.
“Taylor Swift could make Grammy history if she wins Album of the Year for her blockbuster pop crossover album 1989. She claimed this top award in 2009 for ‘Fearless’ when she was just 20, the youngest artist ever to do so. If she prevails again, she’ll be the first woman to win twice as a main album artist. (Other women, including Norah Jones and Alison Krauss, have multiple wins in the category as featured artists.)”
GoldDerby adds that Swift will have to face one of the most critically acclaimed albums of the year, Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly. The academy may actually reward Lamar this year to make up for rewarding hip-hop duo Macklemore & Lewis in all the main hip-hop categories.
GoldDerby predicts Taylor Swift will take home the trophy for Album of the Year, while Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars’ hit single “Uptown Funk” will take Record of the Year. Taylor Swift is predicted to win Best Song with “Blank Space,” and Hozier is predicted to win Best New Artist.
According to People, Kendrick Lamar wants to sweep the Grammy Awards because he thinks the Hip-Hop community deserves it.
“Ultimately, for the hip-hop community, I would love for us to win them all. Because we deserve that. Period. I want all of them. Because it’s not only a statement for myself, but it’s a statement for the culture. They’re all important, because of the foundation the forefathers laid before me.”
People notes that whatever happens on Grammy night, Lamar already has the presidential seal of approval since President Barack Obama named “How Much a Dollar Cost” his favorite song of the year.
It’s important to note that although Taylor Swift and Kendrick Lamar may be rivals at the Grammy Awards, they are good friends. He has not only appeared in Taylor’s “Bad Blood” video, but also appeared in a remix of the song.
“Shout out to Taylor Swift! I enjoy music outside of my own music all the time, so I can definitely see where she’s coming from when she says that she listens to the record and it’s a great thing for her to acknowledge that and put that good energy out into the world like that,” Lamar told The Fader at the end of 2014.
