‘Outlander’ Star Caitriona Balfe Talks Claire’s Complicated Reunion And Sam Heughan On Jamie’s ‘Great Revelation’

With Season 2 of Outlander right around the corner, fans can expect a lot of new surroundings though the tragedy that haunts Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) will still be with them in their new home in France.

Though Jamie is still deeply wounded by the rape by Black Jack Randall (Tobias Menzies), sources say that won’t be the main focus of the show moving forward, and that time along with a new mission to thwart history will bring Jaime out of his own dark place and back into the old Jaime that fans love.

“Time is a great healer,” Sam Heughan said at the Television Critics Association winter press tour in Pasadena, “and ultimately, Jamie puts his whole body and soul into this mission about changing history and there is a great revelation that cures him, or brings him out of himself. I can’t tell you what that is, but it certainly brings back the old Jamie.”

Even though much of Jamie’s storyline is still unknown for now, fans get a sneak peak at Claire and Frank, according to TV Line.

While Jaime goes about his own mission, the pregnant Claire presents her own set of problems for Season 2. With a new spoiler alert dropping a huge splash for Season 2, Claire’s biggest problem is going to happen when she is reunited with her 1940s husband.

Caitriona Balfe talked about what going back means for Claire and how it affects her. “There is that reverse thing where every time she looks at Frank, she can’t help but see Black Jack.” Balfe said during the TCA Winter Press Tour. “There’s many layers of why that relationship is difficult when she goes back. She’s definitely not the same woman that left.”

“[Season 1] was a very reactionary season,” Balfe added. “She was in survival mode. The difference with this season is there’s been time to be in one place and contemplate. Things are sitting with her a lot more, and she has time to consider her place and how she feels.”

The new trailer for Outlander shows Jamie and Claire kissing on the docks of a shipwreck to the words “To new beginnings.” New beginnings certainly don’t bode well for Frank, however.

Speaking of Frank (also Tobias Menzie), he will also be having a rather burdened season. Frank has been searching for his long lost Claire, but when he finds her, Claire won’t be the same person he once knew and, to make matters even more troubling for Frank, Claire is in love with another man and is pregnant with another man’s baby.

Executive producer Ronald Moore dropped hints at the upcoming season’s plot. The two lead characters, Jamie and Claire, will be in France for Season 2 attempting to infiltrate the Jacobite movement. “Claire knows that the Jacobites and the Highlanders were wiped out in the Battle of Cladmoore,” Moore told Behind the Scenes. It’s this journey that helps Jaime recover from the trauma suffered in Season 1.

Unlike Season 1 and the castles that dominated the screen, much of the setting for Season 2 will take place in France with an array of bright colors and a great deal of silk and satin to match the high society Claire and Jamie put themselves into. Then the filmmakers will go back to Scotland and back to the blood and gore.

Though the setting may seem more appealing at times, Jamie and Claire won’t find themselves comfortable by any standards as the characters surrounding them are two-faced, underhanded and cunning.

Outlander Season 2 is scheduled to hit the air sometime in the spring of 2016.
