Megan Rapinoe: The World Needs More Gay Athletes

megan rapinoe

Earlier this week, Olympic soccer star Megan Rapinoe told the world that she was gay. Now she’s urging other athletes to do the same.

Rapinoe toldOut Magazine that the sports world is a little homophobic and that several players are afraid of the backlash they would receive if they admitted that they were gay.

Rapinoe said:

“I feel like sports in general are still homophobic, in the sense that not a lot of people are out. I feel everyone is really craving [for] people to come out. People want — they need — to see that there are people like me playing soccer for the good ol’ U.S. of A.”

Rapinoe was a vital part of the USA’s Women’s Soccer Team’s trip to the World Cup last year and is expected to be a major factor in this year’s Olympics.

Rapinoe said:

“And I still am totally obsessed with the Olympics — I love it, everything around it,… to have the opportunity to be a part of that, to represent your country is just amazing. It’s pretty amazing to have one of your childhood dreams come true.”

Do you think the sports world is homophobic? Will Megan Rapinoe inspire other athletes to come out of the closet?

Rapinoe isn’t the only gay celebrity leading the way in her profession. Singer Frank Ocean recently came out of the closet, admitting that he was sexually attracted to men. Ocean, who is part of the group Odd Future, is regarded as the first hip-hop star to come out of the closet.

I totally disagree. We don't need more gay athletes. We don't need less gay athletes. We need the ones that are gay to come out, for their own good and so people can understand them better.

This is really sad. She is a role model for kids, and revealing her sexual perversions is not the way to be a role model.
She should keep it to herself, or get help.

I assume she made this statement for Ray Charles' sake.

An athlete's sexual preference has nothing whatsoever to do with their sporting activities. Beign a lesbian is what she is. That does not make her a role model.

Dear Megan-I don't effing care. NOBODY CARES. Just kick the ball into the effing net…and shut up. Actually, this goes to everyone who is gay, straight, men, women, drug addicts, porno heads, potheads, liberals, or whatever. WE DON'T EFFING CARE! Just DO YOUR JOB. WHATEVER YOU DO. Then? SHUT UP. PLEASE!
If we want to hear about the travails of personal preferences, afflictions, issues and such, we'll watch effing Oprah.

Perversions?? What rock did you just crawl out from? Or did the mythology of Christianity teach you that? There are GAY KIDS..it is good for them to see someone like Megan and to know that they are not alone..

She's a role model for especially gay kids, and yes, KIDS are gay, who are scared and can now see that someone as accomplished as Megan is gay too.

You need a Xanax..What about COnservative, homophobic, Tea Party assholes? Should they shut up as well..? How about you..? I think it's time for you to shut your pie hole as well. Dick head.

Jen, you sweetheart. Tea Party folks want to cut taxes and stop wasting money. Other attributes towards them are essentially liberals lying. (but I repeat myself)

I like Megan, and am a fan of hers. But did she actually think that anybody out there didn't already know she was a lesbo?

" we need more gay athletes". I don't think we do! Nor do we need less gays in sports. Just play okay?
