CBS reports that Serena had little trouble in the opening set, using her hard serve and powerful groundstrokes to win the first five games and run Radwanska all over the grass.

Radwanska, who was playing in her first Grand Slam final, rallied midway through the second set to even the score at 4-4, and then broke Serena again to take the set 7-5.

“I lost my composure,” Williams said of the second set.

But she regained it quickly. Williams took control of the third set with a break in the fifth game, held to 4-2 and then broke again to take a 5-2 lead. Then she held her serve, and her nerves, to close it out.

With her victory, Williams became the first woman aged 30 or over to win the title since 33-year-old Martina Navratilova won the last of her nine singles titles in 1990.

Following her win, Serena turned to her family and friends, in particular dad Richard, mother Oracene, sister Venus and physiotherapist Esther Lee, and said: “I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

“I could never have done this without you when you were with me in the hospital. Thank you so much.”

Though she wont be the world’s No. 1-ranked Women’s tennis player come Monday — Victoria Azarenka, Radwanska and Maria Sharapova will all be ahead of her — ESPN points out that Serena isn’t concerned with that but rather the fact that she now has five Wimbledon titles, equaling sister Venus’ total.

“I’ve always wanted everything that Venus had,” Williams told ESPN laughing, but serious at the same time. “I had to copy you again. Sorry.”
