‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ — Debunking The Theory Of Who Exactly Is Rey’s Father [Major Spoilers]

While Star Wars: The Force Awakens left fans with plenty to think about, one question remaining centers on the identity of Rey’s (Daisy Ridley) parents. Although the obvious candidates include Leia Organa or Luke Skywalker, there is another theory that may surprise many fans.

According to Tech Insider, one theory that has surfaced asserting that Obi-Wan Kenobi is Rey’s father. In fact, the theory points to several clues in the film that back up this assertion. However, are fans just reading too much into the mystery surrounding Rey’s origins?

For starters, both Ewan McGregor and Alec Guinness, both of whom played Obi-Wan in the past, spoke to Rey while she was in Maz Kanata’s palace. However, these two voices weren’t the only ones in Rey’s vision. In fact, Yoda’s voice can be heard, too, and he is clearly not her father.

Meanwhile, if Kenobi is Rey’s father, then the next question is who is her mother? While it has been established that Kenobi had a romantic interest in Duchess Satine Kryze of Mandalore, he would not likely have broken the Jedi rules in order to be with her. Even more, she died in The Clone Wars, which is way too early to have been Rey’s mother.

Another commonly used argument for the case of Rey Kenobi, as pointed out by Huffington Post, involves Rey’s use of the Jedi mind trick in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. As fans will recall, Rey used her Jedi mind control powers to get the Stormtrooper to open up the door and let her go.

While Obi-Wan is also known to have been talented in the use of the mind trick, so was Luke. In fact, the use of the mind trick is simply something Jedi are able to do and it doesn’t denote a relation to anything but the Force.

Furthermore, there are a few clues that point toward Luke being Rey’s father. First, in the fight between Rey and Kylo Ren, Luke’s lightsaber picks Rey over Kylo, who happens to be Anakin’s grandson. Why would the lightsaber choose someone who isn’t a Skywalker? Shouldn’t the lightsaber have gravitated toward Ren instead?

According to Cinema Blend, the lightsaber clue is one of the many pieces of evidence that fans point to in the Rey Kenobi/Obi-Wan theory. In particular, some have argued that Luke’s lightsaber was handed down to Rey and was drawn to her because Obi-Wan held it in his possession for so many years. Although Obi-Wan did carry the lightsaber for a longer time than Luke, it was always Luke’s destiny to wield it.

Secondly, the teaser trailer for the movie seems to indicate that Rey is related to Luke. In the trailer, Mark Hamill is heard telling someone, “The Force is strong in my family. My father has it, I have it, my sister has it. You have that power, too.”

While it wasn’t known who he was talking to at the time, it would seem fairly obvious now that he was talking to Rey. Even though Hamill’s speech was not included in the final cut of The Force Awakens, he does seem to be talking to someone who is related to him.

Lastly, the entire series is centered on the story of the Skywalker family. With the Star Wars universe revolving around this particular lineage, why would the new movies be any different? It would make more sense if Luke was Rey’s father, continuing that long story arc that began in the first film, A New Hope.

In the end, the secrets involving Rey’s backstory are not likely to be revealed until the next Star Wars movie hits theaters in May 2017.
