6.7 Magnitude Earthquake Rocks Papua, New Guinea

A 6.7 magnitude earthquake rattled the New Ireland region of Papua, New Guinea this morning at 10:19am EST.

The USGS (United States Geological Survey) site says the depth of the quake has been estimated at 35 km (21.7 miles), a relatively shallow quake. No widespread Tsunami alert has been issued but local authorities have said thst small local tsunamis are still a possibility.

Not much is known as of yet about damage or casualties as it’s still too early for official reports to be issued, but we’ll update this page if more details become available.
