Blizzard anticipated that Diablo III‘s Inferno difficulty, which drastically ratchets up the challenge between acts, and the never-ending quest for more and better loot would keep players sticking around for months to come, if not years.

Unfortunately, that doesn’t appear to be the case for most players.

Blizzard CM Micah “Bashiok” Whiple admitted as much in a post on the Diablo III forums, saying that Diablo III‘s loot-driven endgame just isn’t enough for most players. The upcoming PVP patch aims to at least partly address that, but Bashiok admits that it might take more than that to keep the game going long-term.

“Killing enemies and finding items is a lot of fun, and we think we have a lot of the systems surrounding that right, or at least on the right path with a few corrections and tweaks,” Bashiok said in the post.

“But honestly Diablo 3 is not World of Warcraft. We aren’t going to be able to pump out tons of new systems and content every couple of months. There needs to be something else that keeps people engaged, and we know it’s not there right now.”

Part of the reason why I lost interest in Diablo III rather quickly was that I didn’t find the loot to be all that interesting. Finding–or buying–marginally better rares with random, often nonsensical names just doesn’t quite do it for me like hunting down uniques in Diablo II did, even if that was just as monotonous, if not more so.

What would it take for you to keep playing Diablo III, or are you already content with the endgame?
