‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Spoilers: What Happens To Meredith In The Midseason Premiere, Plus More About Owen And Nathan’s Conflict

Hasn’t Meredith been through enough over Grey’s Anatomy’s 12 seasons? It is a drama, after all, and when a series has been on for as long as Grey’s has, they are going to come up with new ways to make the characters suffer. And it’s once again Meredith’s turn when the series returns for the second half of the season.

Although Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal and How to Get Away With Murder, Thursday’s “TGIT” lineup, aren’t back until February 11, ABC has released a promo to remind fans of how each series ended their respective midseason finales and tease what’s yet to come. Yes, there’s Mellie in Olivia’s office (for Scandal) and Annalise holding a baby (on How to Get Away With Murder), but the most shocking moment comes from the Grey’s portion of the promo: Meredith on the ground at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital (as you can see in the photo below, who looks like she may have been in the middle of working on a patient, and then on a stretcher. Her hands are bloody (but is it her own or a patient’s?) and her face is bruised. What happened to her?

As for Alex’s proposal, well, it looks like fans are going to have to wait for even an inkling of Jo’s proposal since the focus is on Meredith.

Entertainment Weekly has some details about what happens to Meredith in the upcoming Denzel Washington-directed, Meredith-centric midseason premiere from a few members of the Grey’s Anatomy cast. Kelly McCreary revealed that she is “attacked by someone you would least expect” and calls the event “terrifying, shocking and harrowing.” Sarah Drew echoed the surprise nature of the attack and used words like “really brutally” and “really viciously.” Given how Meredith looks strapped on that gurney, it sounds like exactly what you would expect.

Tensions have been high between Meredith and Amelia lately, resulting in the latter getting kicked out of the house. According to Caterina Scorsone, “Amelia takes [the attack on Meredith] really hard.”

“Amelia always holds herself extremely responsible for the misfortune of others. In this case especially, she feels somehow responsible, even tough she’s really not.”

E! News has more teasers about the upcoming attack from the Grey’s Anatomy midseason premiere, with Drew calling what happens to Meredith “up there with the worst” of what’s happened to her over the years, explaining that that has to do with the fact that “she is totally powerless in the midst of it.”

James Pickens Jr. also teased that the aftermath of it will be part of the next few episodes “in terms of how somebody [in this case, Meredith] deals with trauma.” And with this, it’s “more in your face” and “on the person” instead of the emotional situations that Meredith has been through over the years.

The attack on Meredith isn’t the only thing coming up in the second half of Season 12. There’s still the mystery of what happened in the past between Owen and Nathan. So far, all anyone really knows for sure is that it involves Owen’s sister, but whether she’s alive or dead (or maybe was injured because of Nathan?) is still unknown. However, Kevin McKidd has told TVLine that viewers will begin finding out what happened around the 14th episode of the season, and it’s not necessarily that his sister is dead.

“It does appear that it’s a death. But it’s more ambiguous than that. There’s nothing definite about the fate of his sister.”

It does seem at least that his sister isn’t in the picture, considering no one knew Owen has/had a sister.

Grey’s Anatomy Season 12 returns Thursday, February 11 at 8 p.m. on ABC.
