Golden Globes Winners 2016: Ricky Gervais Draws Controversy As Host of Live Ceremony

At the 2016 Golden Globe Awards, Ricky Gervais definitely managed to draw the world’s attention, along with some of the Internet’s wrath. The loose-lipped comedian drew fire for a variety of below-the-belt jokes and gratuitous language during the live, televised Golden Globes ceremony, which was hosted in the International Ballroom of the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, Calif. The Golden Globes were held this past Sunday, January 10, starting at 8 p.m. Eastern/5 p.m. Pacific.

EW.com posted a list of the “meanest” zingers Gervais made at the Golden Globes ceremony, including his shot at NBC for having zero Golden Globe nominations, and an implication that the film companies “paid for” their actors to win Golden Globe awards. This isn’t the first time Gervais has hosted the Golden Globes; he was the star of the show in 2010, 2011, and 2012 as well.

Controversy aside, let’s talk about the Golden Globe winners. Matt Damon took home a Golden Globe for “The Martian,” which won for Best Musical Or Comedy. Lady Gaga also picked up a Golden Globe for Best Actress In A Mini-Series or Motion Picture, earned for her role in American Horror Story. She accidentally bumped Leonardo Dicaprio as she walked to the stage to accept the award.

Katy Perry also appeared at the Golden Globes ceremony, appropriately enough, to introduce the award for Best Original Song. The Golden Globe award was snagged by Sam Smith for the song “Writing’s On The Wall” from the James Bond movie Spectre.

Other presenters at the Golden Globes included comedienne Amy Schumer and actors Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill (the latter of whom was dressed as a bear). Other highlights included Brad Pitt having a fake on-stage argument with Ryan Gosling, and a moving tribute to late actor Paul Walker by his co-worker Vin Diesel. Diesel expressed his mourning over the loss of Walker by singing a touching rendition of the song “See You Again,” which was included in Walker’s last film, Furious 7.

Jennifer Lawrence scooped up the Golden Globe for Best Performance By An Actress In A Motion Picture-Musical or Comedy for her movie “Joy.” Drama film The Revenant scored several Golden Globes, including Best Motion Picture for a Drama, Best Director in a Motion Picture (Alexander Iñárritu), and Best Performance By An Actor in a Motion Picture (Leonardo Dicaprio).

Will Smith’s widely-acclaimed movie Concussion was passed over by the Golden Globes for the last category but did manage to get a Best Actor nomination. The other nominees for the same category included Michael Fassbender (for playing the titular character in the film Steve Jobs) and Eddie Redmayne (for playing a character in The Danish Girl who undergoes a sex-change operation).

Matt Damon competed alongside several other Hollywood talents to earn the Golden Globe Award for Best Performance By An Actor In A Motion Picture, including Christian Bale and Steve Carrel, who were both nominated for The Big Short. The Big Short was also nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Screenplay-Motion Picture, though they lost the Golden Globe to Aaron Sorkin’s Steve Jobs.

Disney’s Inside Out went home with a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture-Animated, beating out nominees Shaun The Sheep Movie, The Good Dinosaur, Anomalisa, and The Peanuts Movie. A Hungarian film called Son of Saul earned the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture-Foreign Language. Let us know what you thought of the Golden Globe nominees and winners. Do you think the films and actors that won deserved to take home the gold?
