Is ‘Destiny’ Headed To Mercury In Next Event? ‘The Dawning’ Hinted

Bungie has more events planned for Destiny Year Two with at least two updates guaranteed. An emblem given to PlayStation and Xbox players over the weekend, combined with data-mined information, suggests that the next event could be based on or around Mercury.

Destiny players who logged into the game between January 7 and January 10 received a gift in the Tower of several Motes of Light and Strange Coins. They also received a “Rising Light” emblem that Bungie advertised as part of the “Days of the Dawning” with the tagline, “A time to celebrate the past year, and look forward to the next.”

While the belated New Year’s gift from Bungie was welcomed by players, it also appears to have hinted at the next event in Destiny. Dedicated data-mining sites, such as Planet Destiny, discovered multiple items related to “The Dawning” in December, as pointed out by Reddit user Toland27.

These items include letters from the major NPC characters in the game’s Tower and Reef social areas. It also lists a “Random Dawning Mask,” suggesting that this will be another masked event similar to the Festival of the Lost.

This, combined with the emblem showing Vex structures with the sun as the backdrop, has led to Eurogamer and others to believe that the next event will be related to Mercury.

Does that mean Destiny players can look forward to new areas being added to explore? Likely not for “The Dawning” event. Bungie previously explained that the event will be around the size of Festival of the Lost, which was a fun addition for Halloween but did not add any new areas to explore.

There is the following update to Destiny to look forward to. Bungie Community Manager Eric “Urk” Osborne explained the Year Two plans in December, as covered by the Inquisitr.

“There’s a whiteboard in one of our meeting rooms filled with scribblings and sticky notes that represent the developments planned for Destiny‘s not-so-distant future,” Osborne explained. “Events, activities, content, and features designed to keep you happy, entertained, and rewarded throughout the year to come: some events and some activities that will become additions to your Director.”

Osborne then provided the details Destiny players have been hoping to hear when it comes to expanding the current base of content. 2016 will start off with another smaller event before the first of significant content updates arrive.

“The first of these early 2016 experiences will be on a scale close to Festival of the Lost. The second will be far larger than anything you’ve seen since the release of The Taken King. There’s also another significant update to the world and sandbox planned in this same window,” Osborne revealed.

The most recent Bungie Weekly Update was non-eventful with the exception that regular information dumps will begin again on January 21. For now, it looks as if late January or February will be the earliest to expect the next update to Destiny. Presumably, that will include “The Dawning.”

As previously covered, Destiny has moved away from major DLC add-on releases for Year Two. The Dark Below and House of Wolves forced Bungie to rethink how it will handle content for the game going forward. The decision for Year Two was to go with smaller updates driven by the Live Team and supported through microtransactions.

This led to the introduction of the Eververse Trading Company in-game that sells emotes along with event-specific items such as the Sparrow Racing League Record Book and packages that contained masks during the Festival of the Lost.

A sequel to Destiny is expected this fall. Whether players can expect to see a new Raid, Strikes, or Story mission content before then is completely unknown.
