Gabby Giffords Will Have Hillary’s Back For The 2016 Election

The Huffington Post reports that former Arizona congresswoman and gun-violence-victim-turned-gun-control-advocate, Gabby Giffords, a Democrat, has announced her endorsement for Hillary Clinton.

Giffords’ husband, retired-astronaut Mark Kelly, has also announced his support for Clinton. The couple’s endorsement for the presidential hopeful is independent from their political action committee, Americans for Responsible Solutions — the group is dedicated to curbing gun violence.

According to CBS News, Gabby Giffords has been an advocate of tightening firearm legislation since 2011. This past weekend marked the five-year anniversary since Giffords was shot in the head at a supermarket parking lot in Tucson, Arizona. Six other innocent bystanders were killed during the incident as well.

Giffords claims that the Clinton administration has proven to be the only political party to effectively stand up to the gun industry. Her proposals have made Hillary more attractive as a president, according to Giffords. CBS News reports that Clinton’s proposals include the following:

  • For Congress to require any person engaging in a high volume of gun sales, in particular at gun shows and on the internet, to be held to the same standards as sellers at gun stores.
  • The urging of Congress to close the loophole which allows gun sales to go through without a completed background check when a check is not completed within three days. Clinton will call this loophole the “Charleston Loophole” because this is the clause which allowed the Charleston shooter, Dylan Roof, to purchase a weapon.
  • More comprehensive legislation that bans all domestic abusers from buying or possessing guns. The current laws set in place now do not implicitly ban these sort of offenders from purchasing firearms necessarily.
  • Clinton will lastly propose that gun manufacturers and the NRA be held responsible for criminal or unlawful use of their products.

Clinton voted against the final proposal as a senator in 2005, whereas senator Bernie Sanders, (I-VT) voted in favor for legal immunity for manufacturers.

“Maybe it’s time for Sen. Sanders to stand up and say, ‘I got this one wrong,'” Clinton said, CBS News reports.

Clinton says that she will repeal this law as president, claiming that the gun organization only keeps their best interests in mind.

Giffords was also present as a prominent figure during President Obama’s executive order on guns speech last week. Giffords and her husband played a major role during private White House meetings regarding business loopholes and standard regulations set within the gun industry.

Together, Giffords and Hillary, hope to initiate a rally against the NRA and continue pushing for more effective gun regulations. Clinton also stated the following.

“It is time to act, but Republicans keep refusing to do anything to protect our communities. They put the NRA ahead of American families. It is wrong and we need to make every politician who signs with them, to look into the eyes of parents whose children have been murdered and explain why they listened to the gun lobbyists instead.”
