Being careful with what you eat is now more important than ever. This is because there is one ingredient that is in almost everyone’s kitchen that can increase your chance of getting breast cancer or even lung cancer. What is this common food ingredient? Sugar! That’s right, sugar. This is because both sucrose and glucose are in sugar and they can increase your chances of getting these diseases.
The Motley Fool reports that a study was done by researchers from MD Anderson that suggests that too much sugar consumption can increase the chances of getting these cancers. The research study was done on New Year’s Eve, Dec. 31, 2015, and was published online on New Year’s Day. In fact, the researchers did the study on mice by giving them the same amount of sugar that is found in a western diet. The findings are incredible. They found when giving some of the mice a starch-rich diet, that 30 percent of the mice developed breast cancer. This was done by the time they were 6-months-old. However, 50- to 60 percent of the mice that were given a diet rich in sugar, had mammary tumors by the time they were 6-months-old as well.
After the study was done, the researcher’s figured out that fructose was the ingredient in sugar that caused the cancers. The two components found in fructose are sucrose and glucose. Fructose is found in table sugar, as well as high fructose corn syrup which is actually a liquid sugar.
The American Cancer Society says that breast cancer is the second most common cancer in American women with skin cancer being right behind it. In fact, the American Cancer Society also found that in 2015, there were at least 40,000 deaths of American women from breast cancer. Not only this, but during the same year, there were 231,840 women diagnosed with breast cancer. That is a huge number and it needs to be taken seriously since this cancer is deadly serious. Women aren’t the only ones who get it either, since men can also be diagnosed with the disease.
The problem is, Eco Watch says, sugar is found in every type of processed and packaged food we buy in the grocery stores these days. This is a scary situation to be in because we are eating it all the time without even realizing it. In fact, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, sugar consumption such as table sugar and high fructose corn syrup increased by 39 percent between 1950 and 1959 and the year 2000. Americans don’t realize it but they are consuming 152 pounds of sugar per year. That is a lot of sugar and a higher increased risk of getting these types of cancers. This is actually more than the natural sugars we consume that comes in fruits, veggies, legumes, and grains which is really all we need for our daily intake of required sugar.
Although it is hard to figure out the amount of people who have been diagnosed with breast cancer because of too much sugar consumption on a daily basis, it is easy enough to change your eating habits and make sure you don’t increase your daily sugar intake. Just make sure you get enough fruits, vegetables, legumes, and grains in your diet and don’t overdo it.
