Unless cancelled because of a heat wave or rain in some areas of the country, millions of Americans will celebrate July 4, Independence Day, by watching official (or perhaps unofficial) fireworks displays later this evening. As The Inquistr previously reported, it is reassuring to know that 70% of Americans still support the Declaration of Independence according to a Rasmussen poll.

Fireworks–within reason–are as American as July 4th parades, barbecues, picnics, and other family and patriotic events.

Then again, you’ve heard the expression “don’t try this at home,” right?  The July 4th barbecue is not the only thing that could be dangerous.

As shown by the video below, this warning is particularly worth considering when it comes to staging your own neighborhood fireworks celebration while avoiding becoming a candidate for the Darwin Awards.

Because of safety concerns, personal use of fireworks is banned or restricted in various states.  The last thing that authorities want is a neighborhood looking like a war zone or people getting hurt.

Some municipalities or states have implemented a “sane and safe” fireworks policy which generally (subject to variations by jurisdiction) means that they don’t shoot up in the air, move about on the ground, or explode. Clearly the folks in the video below were not following the sane and safe policy.

Safety tips from  U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and the National Council on Fireworks Safety include always read the label on consumer fireworks, buy them only from reliable licensed sellers, be sure to have water handy, and never throw fireworks at another person or carry fireworks in your pocket.
