The Steel Magnolias remake is one step closer to reality. Lifetime released the first trailer for the new movie, which stars Queen Latifah, Phylicia Rashad and Alfre Woodard.

Lifetime made headlines earlier this year when it announced that it was going to remake the classic 1989 movie (which starred Dolly Parton, Daryl Hannah, Julia Roberts, Sally Field, Shirley MacLaine, and Olympia Dukakis) with an all-black cast.

Nancy Dubuc, president and general manager of Lifetime Entertainment, said in a statement:

“The caliber of talent associated with this film is astounding and falls in line with our strategy to make Lifetime a first stop for the industry’s best both in front of and behind the camera… Queen Latifah, Phylicia, Alfre, Jill, Adepero and Condola are some of the most celebrated women in music, film, television and stage — and we could not be more thrilled and honored for them to bring Robert Harling’s poignant story about the strength of women to a whole new generation.”

The new film follows the lives of six Louisiana women. The movie is based on the play by Robert Harling, which was made famous when it was adapted into a movie in 1989.

The original was amazing.. one of my faves.. and I love everyone that's in the remake.. I'd like to see it.. anything that elevates sisterhood is ok in my book.. :)

  2. I love the actresses in the remake, but the original had amazing actresses. Olympia Ducacus, Sally Field, Shirley Mcclain Julia Roberts. Come on people. STOP MAKING REMAKES. Use your imagination Hollywood. Come on.

  3. Stop ruining movies by remaking them you can't top a classic.

  4. The original "Steel Magnolias" is a classic and shouldn't be remade.

  5. With all the talented and creative people in the world, why are they still making remakes?

  6. I'm wondering the same thing! I don't think you can improve on perfection and the original was perfect! I don't know whether I want to see the new one or not.

  7. I'm extremely devoted to the original. In fact I have committed lines to memory. When I heard they were remaking this with an all black cast, I thought, "Oh NO!" BUT, now that I see the cast (all my favorites) and the trailer, I am looking forward to seeing this remake. Downside; If lifetime is going to broadcast this movie…COMMERCIALS!

    Great cast

  9. While I'm impressed with the new cast , I just don't think they can improved on the original. Some things don't need to be remade…….any Marvin Gaye song and this movie.

  10. Originals the best.

  11. You can't remake a great movie like this one. While these black women are good, they aren't the great actresses that made the original.

  12. I loved the original movie, I hope the new cast will do well. nothing compares to the original, Sally Field vs Queen Latifah, ummm I don't know if Latifah can do it.

  15. I love the cast. Yes, it will be different than the original, but you would have to have a heart of stone not to enjoy QL, Phylicia Rashad and Jill Scott. I'm super excited because in some of the salon scenes, Queen Latifah is wearing a cheetah salon cape made by my company <a href="http://www.berazorsharp.com"&gt; Razor Sharp Salon Wear</a>! So exciting! http://www.berazorsharp.com
