CERN scientists announced today that they have found a new subatomic particle which appears to be the fabled Higgs boson or “God Particle.”
“We have reached a milestone in our understanding of nature… The discovery of a particle consistent with the Higgs boson opens the way to more detailed studies, requiring larger statistics, which will pin down the new particle’s properties, and is likely to shed light on other mysteries of our universe…. We have now found the missing cornerstone of particle physics.”
The particles existence was confirmed by two independent research teams.
Oliver Buchmueller, a senior physicist on one of the research teams, said:
“The fact that both our teams have independently come to the same results is very powerful… We know it is a new boson. But we still have to prove definitively that it is the one that Higgs predicted.”
The NY Daily News reports that CERN scientists have definitely found a boson, but they aren’t exactly sure if it’s the Higgs Boson. Regardless, the discovery will shed new light on the origins of the universe.
“As a layman, I think we did it. We have a discovery. We have observed a new particle that is consistent with a Higgs boson…. As a layman, I think we have it. But as a scientist, I have to say, ‘What do we have?'”
The Higgs boson, imagined by theoretical physicist Peter Higgs a half century ago, is a sub-atomic particle that is responsible for conferring mass. Scientists believe that the discovery of the Higgs boson can help them better understand the Big Bang and the origins of the universe.
