Katie Holmes emerged from hiding on Monday without her wedding ring, in what was her first public appearance since filing for divorce from Tom Cruise.

When the 33-year-old actress left her Manhattan apartment to film a guest appearance on Project Runway, she did so without the Cartier diamond-studded wedding band that she been seen wearing as recently as last week.

Holmes looked the part in a navy ensemble and stilettos, with her brunette locks tied into a smart ponytail. And, while she was being papped by the crowd of photographers who had virtually camped outside her apartment, other details were emerging about how she was intent on breaking free of her old life.

Apparently, Holmes has returned to her old, pre-Cruise publicist: Leslie Sloane at BWR. She has fired the publicist she had worked with since 2007 and, according to TMZ, has already sacked her husband’s security team, including a bodyguard and driver who had worked for Cruise for years; even before he met Holmes. Until they were let go, both were still keeping a protective eye on the actress and six-year-old daughter Suri while they were in New York.

TMZ also suggested the actress chose to split from Cruise because the actor was planning to enter Suri into the ultrazealous Scientology group called Sea Org. The Church of Scientology has denied this.

Earlier in the day, a series of pricey-looking cars and SUVs were spotted parked outside the star’s NYC apartment. Some outlets claimed these belonged to Scientologists keeping track of Holmes, but the church later told E! News there was “no truth” to these reports.
