Lamar Odom once was photographed constantly during his peak as a popular, successful NBA player, married to reality TV star Khloe Kardashian. Then came trouble, with reports of cheating and substance abuse. Khloe filed for divorce, but before Kardashian could finalize the process came news that Lamar had been found unconscious in a brothel after a drug overdose. Khloe rushed to his side, and since that terrifying day in October, has visited him regularly in the hospital where he remains since his initial transport from Nevada.
Now, for the first time since his overdose and reports of serious brain damage, a photo of Odom has surfaced. And it’s from one of his children, showing Lamar with his kids rather than Kardashian, as the Inquisitr reported.
Lamar Jr. made it clear that he is grateful Odom survived, smiling with his father in the the first picture of Odom since prior to his overdose.
“Christmas with my pops. Here’s to 2016. Blessed,” wrote Lamar Jr. on Instagram, sharing a photo that subsequently was tweeted by various sources.

But despite the touching caption, his father continues to have problems recovering. At 36, Odom still faces challenges in terms of memory loss and walking without support. In addition to Lamar Jr., he has a daughter, both of whom he shares with Liza Morales, his former wife. However, Odom is still legally married to Khloe.
Khloe Kardashian Plans To Stop Support
That legal situation has put Kardashian in the role of his medical adviser, leading to questions about what’s next for Lamar as he has not yet recovered sufficiently from brain damage to be moved to rehab. Khloe also has been managing his financial affairs, and as a result, Kardashian is planning to gradually stop her support, according to Radar Online‘s source.
“It’s a delicate situation, because Lamar’s so sensitive and there’s no easy way for Khloe to tell him she’s not coming back [as his wife],” said the source. “She’s finding the whole strain of running his finances and medical planning way too much to bear, since so much of her own life has had to go on hold.”
Kardashian has faced the challenge of determining how to continue enjoying her own life and new boyfriend James Harden while not suddenly turning her back on Odom. And to those who criticized her, she made it clear that she feels she’s done right by her estranged husband while still planning to finalize the divorce.
“Divorce is still going forward. Doesn’t mean I won’t be there through sickness and health. I’ve proven that,” retorted Khloe in response to criticism.
Kardashian also is worried that spending too much time with Lamar is hurting her romance with Harden.
“He has been a saint, but he’s getting extremely frustrated at still playing second fiddle to Lamar,” said Radar’s insider. “That’s why Khloe’s had to start the withdrawal process — she’s terrified of driving James any further away.”
But can Lamar manage on his own, and how serious is his brain damage?
Lamar Odom Struggles To Recover From Brain Damage
Khloe has claimed that she believes Lamar can be “mentally fully recovered,” but an insider told ET a very different tale of his status, saying that Odom continues to struggle.
“He’s not doing great,” the source revealed. “His speech is still slurred and he can barely walk on his own yet. He forgets a lot of people’s names — sometimes even his own. He definitely has some memory loss.”
Appearing recently on the Ellen DeGeneres show, Khloe admitted that Lamar’s recovery may not be as rapid as she had hoped, reported News Limited.
Kardashian confessed that Odom cannot put together a complete sentence in addition to his problems walking and with his memory.
“He is off all the machines that help his organs but he has such a long way to go,” revealed Khloe. “He’s learning how to walk again and feed himself again and put sentences together. Cognitively there is a lot… He couldn’t put words together today.”
