Sia’s New Experimantal Album: Songs Rejected By Other Artists

Sia has proven herself to be a chart-topping singer and music writer. Her latest hit is the single “Chandelier.” However, during the past few years, she hasn’t just been writing songs for herself, but also for other top performers in the music industry, including the likes of Adele and Beyoncé. Amazingly, some of those songs were rejected because the performers they were written for didn’t think they would be hits.

In a candid interview with Rolling Stone, Sia revealed that she believes these songs are hits and she has recorded them for her new album to prove it.

“I feel like they’re hits, but nobody wanted them. So I thought, ‘Let’s see, as an experiment, if I’m right.'”

Sia spoke about how every song on the new album, titled This Is Acting, was originally written with the intention of someone else singing them.

“Yes, actually, I guess all of them were written with the intention of being for somebody else. But there is one I didn’t send to anybody called ‘One Million Bullets.’ That one I liked — and I already had so much of the album completed — but I loved it and didn’t want to give it to anyone else. So that one I don’t think I sent to anyone else, but my memory’s terrible. There’s one that I went into a session with Kanye, to write for Rihanna, so that one was intended for her, but then I’m keeping that one.”

Rolling Stone also reports that Sia understands how writing songs for other artists is very much a business transaction.

“The other night [Rihanna] came over and listened to half of 25 songs I played for her because she’s still looking for songs for her new album. She was there to listen to songs and see if there was anything that she was into. It was a business meeting for sure. She took four but I don’t know if they’ll end up [on the album].”

One song that is on This Is Acting is a song originally meant for Rihanna called “Cheap Thrills.” Check it out here.

It certainly does sound like a hit song.

Sia is known for not showing her face during a performance or any public interview. She is also known for having very creative and expressive dancers who do show their faces and who provide the artistic and very emotional expression of movement to accompany Sia’s music and lyrics. One of these dancers is Maddie Ziegler, who has starred in three of Sia’s music videos, including “Chandelier” and has been performing on Dance Moms since 2011.

Us Weekly reports that Ziegler is leaving Dance Moms to pursue a career in Hollywood. With Sia as her mentor – Sia has already cast Ziegler in her feature film Sister – Zielger is well on her way to Hollywood success. A source revealed Ziegler is in high demand.

“Acting is something she’s really excited to pursue and [Maddie] is in high demand.”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sia was hesitant at first to make a movie.

“I was too embarrassed to tell anyone I wanted to make a movie because I thought it would be seen as a vanity project because I was a singer… And then last year, after I made the ‘Chandelier’ video, I realized that I was pretty good at directing, so I felt a little bit braver.”

The movie Sister is sure to be a hit, if Sia is behind it and Ziegler is on the stage.
