Mike Holmgren Wants San Francisco 49ers Head Coach Job

San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Tomsula is on the hot seat, and former Green Bay Packers head coach Mike Holmgren has expressed interest once again, according to CBS Sports.

When Jim Harbaugh was forced out as the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers, many fans were desperately hoping that the team would sign a big name coach to replace him.

A big name coach did submit his applications to the San Francisco 49ers. Mike Holmgren, who famously took Brett Favre and the Green Bay Packers to the Super Bowl, wanted the job.

The San Francisco 49ers reportedly showed little interest in Mike Holmgren, as team owner Jed York and general manager Trent Baalke wanted some continuity instead of starting all over again.

Jed York and Trent Baalke opted to promote one of their own assistants that were already familiar with the system that was installed by Jim Harbaugh over the past four seasons.

Jim Tomsula was given the head coaching job by the San Francisco 49ers because he had a strong rapport with the defensive players and knew what management wanted from the team.

With just one game remaining during the NFL regular season, the San Francisco 49ers are sitting on a 4-11 record and are scheduled to face a very strong St. Louis Rams team next.

At most, Jim Tomsula can win five games this season, and he fully knows that he is already on the hot seat, even if this is just his first year as head coach of the San Francisco 49ers.

Before the firing has even taken place, there are already talks that Mike Holmgren has been telling those close to him that he will try to contact the San Francicsco 49ers again this year.

Of course, having been in the NFL since 1986, Mike Holmgren knows that it is not appropriate for coaches to talk about potential available head coaching gigs before the firing happens.

While the San Francisco 49ers showed very little interest in Mike Holmgren last year, the case might be different next year because of what went down with Jim Tomsula in year one.

As is expected of any rookie coach in the NFL, Jim Tomsula made his fair share of mistakes, and the extremely humble Pennsylvania native would be the first to admit his errors.

There were plenty of times where it seemed that the San Francisco 49ers would have been better off with a veteran coach who has seen and experienced a lot more hardships in his career.

In his 16 years as head coach of the Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks, Mike Holmgren has experienced a lot of bad moments to go along with a lot of the good and great moments.

Mike Holmgren has also experienced plenty of moments with the San Francisco 49ers, as he was an assistant coach for the team from 1986 until 1991, winning Super Bowls in 1988 and 1989.

As an offensive guru, Mike Holmgren has an impressive track record in building up quarterbacks. Steve Young, Brett Favre and Matt Hasselback all developed under his watchful eyes.

If the San Francisco 49ers are not completely ready to give up on Colin Kaepernick as their franchise quarterback, then someone like Mike Holmgren might be able to help him develop.

Geep Chryst didn’t exactly help Colin Kaepernick out by removing some of the things that made the mobile quarterback quite the offensive weapon for the San Francisco 49ers.

Someone like Mike Holmgren is clever enough on offense to reinstate some of those things. He might even be able to come up with more ways of utilizing Colin Kaepernick.

The San Francisco 49ers should, at the very least, give Mike Holmgren a phone call.
