Officials in Michigan are attempting to cut down on the number of DUI arrests in the state by turning to urinal cakes.

Known as “Interactive Urinal Communicators” the small devices are placed inside of urinals at bars and restaurants where alcohol is served, as each guy uses the urinal the devices rely on motion detection to activate and then send a message about drinking and driving.

Officials are distributing four hundred of the urinal cakes to 200 eateries before July 4 and if successful more of the products could end up in other locations around the state and perhaps around the country.

The cakes deliver a short message that says:

“Listen up. That’s right, I’m talking to you. Had a few drinks? Maybe a few too many? Then do yourself and everyone else a favor: Call a sober friend or a cab. Oh, and don’t forget to wash your hands.”

Officials were smart in choosing where to send their “don’t drink and drive” message, realizing that many guys stop at the bathroom as their last destination before they head out for their vehicles and begin driving under the influence.

The urinal cakes aren’t cheap at $21 per unit but they do last for three months and the tab for the urinal cakes are picked up by federal traffic safety funds.

A tip for potential users of the “at home” versions. Your buddy probably drunkenly reached his hand into a urinal to steal the urinal cake he now has sitting on the back of his toilet at home.
