Lauryn Hill Pleads Guilty in N.J. to Failing to File Taxes

It looks like Lauryn Hill, 37, is singing a different tune after the government caught on to her failing to file taxes. At first her excuse was that she “was underground” and “protecting her family”. Now it’s said that the Miseducation singer is pleading guilty for not filing her taxes.

The taxes that Hill hasn’t paid in three years in 2005, 2006, and 2007, racks up to a tune of $1.3 million. In the past statements have been made by collaborator Wyclef Jean that Lauryn Hill at times wasn’t mentally healthy, which would probably be a more excusable reason for not paying taxes.

On Friday Hill appeared in a district court in Newark, NJ and admitted to not filing for taxes for those three years. The singer, who was excited about making a comeback in her career faces a maximum sentence of one year on each count for each year.

In the last few years the Fugees singer has been in a bit of trouble. She disappeared after winning eight Grammys, had six children, five of them who are fathered by Rohan Marley, the son of famous reggae singer Bob Marley. In the last year there’s been a battle between Hill and Marley over whether or not he’s the father of her sixth child, with Marley claiming he isn’t and Lauryn claiming that he is indeed the father.

Rohan Marley also made headlines when he left Lauryn while she was pregnant and it was reported that he cheated on her as well.

Do you think Lauryn Hill will get jail time?
