Martin Brodeur has hired agent Pat Brisson, bringing speculation that the NHL player may soon test the free agent market. The Devils player becomes an unrestricted free agent this summer.

Yahoo News reports that Devils President/GM Lou Lamoriello stated after the season that:

“I’ve said it all along. He’ll make the decision whether he wants to come back. Marty will be a Devil as long as he wants to be. I don’t think there’s ever something he and I have trouble with. I don’t want to see him put on any other uniform. I don’t think he wants to.”

That desire may be put to the test soon, as reports are circulating that Brodeur has “had limited contract discussions with Devils. Could still sign before Sunday, but leaning toward open market.”

The Star-Ledger reports that the move by Brodeur may be the result of the Devils shaky financial situation, making them unable to commit on a contract offer for the veteran goalie, forcing him to test out the free agent market starting Sunday. Although Martin Brodeur made a comment at the end of the playoffs that he couldn’t imagine playing for another team, the Devils’ reported financial problems may force him to do just that.

TSN notes that Brisson has informed them that, “[Brodeur] will be testing free agency if a deal is not in place by Sunday.”

Tom Gulitti with Fire & Ice reports that Martin Brodeur has represented himself in contract negotiations with the New Jersey Devils before, but “hinted that he would hire an agent if he ended up in a situation where he had to negotiate with other teams.”
