Spice Girls Reunion Tour A Go According To Scary Spice

The five original members of the Spice Girls haven’t appeared on stage together since 2012, but if one member has her way, that will change in 2016.

According to the Daily Mail, Mel B, known during her Spice Girls days as Scary Spice, appeared on Alan Carr’s New Year’s Specstacular and the host asked the singer if a reunion of the epic pop group is in the cards. Once again, Mel B confirmed that the ambassadors of girl power will reunite in 2016 to mark their 20th anniversary.

“To be serious, it is our twentieth anniversary this year and it would be rude not to celebrate so hopefully something will be happening pretty soon. I can’t tell you what it is yet!”

The rumor that the Spice Girls would take the stage again in 2016 has been around for a few months, but it received a shot in the arm thanks to a picture posted to Mel B’s official Instagram account featuring three of the five original Spice Girls.

Mel B isn’t the only former Spice Girl hoping for a reunion tour. According to celebrity gossip blogger Perez Hilton, Mel C, formerly known as Sporty Spice, wants to do a reunion tour, but she won’t sign on if Victoria Beckham isn’t involved.

Victoria (nee Adams), known as Posh Spice, catapulted to super stardom when she married soccer player David Beckham in 1998. After the Spice Girls split to pursue solo work, Victoria Beckham turned her eye for fashion into a highly successful business. Reportedly, Victoria isn’t keen on the idea of putting her fashion career or family on hold to tour again, but she’s given the other members her blessing to continue without her. That doesn’t sit well with Melanie C.

But, according to The Sun, Mel B is prepared to push on with reunion plans, even if that means Posh Spice isn’t on stage with them. The four remaining members of the Spice Girls are reportedly meeting with top concert promoters and agents to get the ball rolling. John Giddings, organizer of the revived Isle of Wight Festival, is among the promoters on the short list to put together a potential Spice Girls 20th anniversary tour.

“For a long time they put off the idea of working any projects without her because they wanted to stay as a five-piece, but with the 20th anniversary coming up they realized it was a case of now or never.”

More than nostalgia is at stake for the Spice Girls. Their 2007 reunion tour earned the band an estimated $107.5 million in ticket sales and merchandise. While none of the members are broke, Victoria Beckham’s estimated $300 million net worth means that she doesn’t need to tour to stay afloat. That, coupled with the band’s well-received appearance at the 2012 Olympics in Lodon, might make Victoria Beckham reluctant to risk the band overstaying their welcome with a reunion tour.

The Spice Girls At the height of the Spice Girl’s fame, the Spice Girls sold 85 million records and starred in a movie inspired by their lives, Spice World. Their skimpy clothes, outlandish antics, and sometimes racy lyrics ushered in an era of pop music dominated by girl groups that continues today with artists like Beyonce and Taylor Swift. Their female positive message, summarized in the slogan “girl power,” became a rallying cry for teenage girls and young women in the late 90s.

Spice Girl fans of the world unite! Dig out your platform shoes and wild print pants. Just skip the ponytail thong and pencil-thin eyebrows. Not even the Spice Girls could pull off that look.
