Today we can all speak Persian…well, produce a shitty translated version at least

Just in time for a green revolution, Google has added Persian to the list of languages supported by Google Translate.

Google notes that the timing is “particularly important now, given ongoing events in Iran” but also notes rightly that “as with all machine translation, it’s not perfect yet.” It has also labeled the Persian translation service as being in Alpha.

The idea is solid and Google should be congratulated for launching it, but if there’s one thing we know for sure, the results won’t be good. The translations are enough to get a general idea of what the story being translated is about, but likewise you get results like this one, a direct translation from the front page of the BBC Arabic service:

Huge opposition rally in Tehran; canceled Friday demonstrations

At the same time massive march protesting the election results in Tehran, the program is announced the day after the demonstration Friday Prayers Mehdi Karroubi demanded that it was canceled and has been postponed to Saturday.

Still better than nothing. Just because I can here’s the translated version of this post. Feel free to pick it to shreds if you read Persian:
