‘Big Bang Theory’ Spoilers: Show Could Be Nearing Its Final Season, Showrunner Reveals

The Big Bang Theory could be nearing its final season, showrunner Steve Molaro revealed in a recent interview.

The show has been a stalwart for CBS since its introduction, consistently topping the ratings and generating headlines for guest stars like Bob Newhart.

Despite the success, The Big Bang Theory may come with an end date. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Molaro said that the show could come to an end along with the contracts for cast members.

“The reality is that maybe Season 10 is the ending point,” Molaro said when asked about the show’s future. “The real answer is I don’t know and all I can do right now is go episode to episode and try to make each one the best that we can.”

Molaro added that he isn’t thinking about when The Big Bang Theory could end, saying that even if Season 10 turns out to be the final season, he’s not worried about it yet.

Chuck Lorre, the show’s co-creator, added that the show has already surpassed everyone’s expectations.

“I never imagined nine [seasons] and here we are,” added co-creator Chuck Lorre. “I’m not going to presume to know how many years this has because it’s ridiculous for me to guess… as long as everybody is having a good time and we’re making a show we’re proud of … then it’s worth continuing.”

There could already be signs that The Big Bang Theory is nearing its end. In the ninth season, the show’s characters have reached a number of milestones, including Leonard (Johnny Galecki) and girlfriend Penny (Kaley Cuoco) getting married, and longtime couple Sheldon (Jim Parsons) and Amy (Mayim Bialik) finally having sex for the first time.

Molaro may have revealed other spoilers about the future of The Big Bang Theory, comparing Sheldon and Amy’s decision to have sex to “trying to decide when to have a baby.”

“Is there ever really a right time? I mean, in my own personal experience, it never quite felt like, ‘OK, this is exactly the right time to have a baby. Let’s do this.’ Our biggest concern with the show was doing it right and honoring the characters, more than the actual timeline.”

The showrunner added that it was important for The Big Bang Theory to have the moment in the middle of the season as opposed to the finale, which will allow more interaction between the characters and to show how the relationship moves forward.

There will likely be a break from the Sheldon and Amy storyline moving forward, Molaro added. Viewers know that Sheldon has his Meemaw’s ring tucked away and he could be proposing, but Molaro said that’s on the back burner for now.

Whatever happens, The Big Bang Theory‘s showrunner will likely keep fans waiting, and on purpose, too. TVLine compared the situation to Castle, in which the main characters this season had a reunion that was “taking a time out from their time out,” and suggested that Sheldon and Amy could be in a similar situation.

If the spoilers about The Big Bang Theory ending come true, it would not be the only longtime show rumored to be going off the air. There are some other comedies going off the air, including Mike & Molly, and rumors that others like 2 Broke Girls could be reaching the end, as well. These departures could actually be a strong sign for The Big Bang Theory, with a hole in the CBS schedule, it is more likely TBBT will remain on the air.
